Good morning.
Got some taps (free addition to my last tool purchase) and can not figure out what they are used for. Can anybody educate me about them?

Good a good deal on them: was shopping at a yard sale and found them laying on the floor next to the tool box. Picket them up, gave them to the owner with recommendation to look under the box as there might be more staff under it.
After I bought what I wanted and was leaving, the owner grabbed the extractors and a rusted out tap with the tap holder and told me I could have it if I wanted to try to clean them up and use them.
Here is the tap handle and the tap after some Evaporust and cleaning:
GTD handle and Bay State 10/32 44 HF HS tap which was stuck in it...
Evaporust is great to separate parts rusted together - I could not even move the holding nut on the bottom - took around 12 hours of soaking...

If it doesn't have a name brand or feel cheap, just used it as last resort... thing... they don't work most of the times. the times they do work, you probably don't really needed it.
If they break inside a broken bolt down the hole... hehehehe have fun time.
Even the one I have OEM brand that came with the matching drill bits still breaks...they are cheap it's about $20 or less.

I have several types of extractors. They all have their applications but personally I find the type you have are the least used.

"Easy Out" is actually a brand name but like 'Kleenex' is used to refer to a different style of screw extractor for small screws that have a drill side, or burnisher side, that you use in a drill in reverse first and then flip them around to use the spiral extractor side, also in reverse at a very slow speed.

The spiral screw extractors in the OP are for larger screws or bolts you need to drill out a hole for them first (best to use a left-hand bit if you have one) and then use the spiral extractor in a tap handle or I prefer a tap socket on a breaker bar / ratchet. If you sent me for an 'easy out' I would not return with this style of extractor. They're totally different animals.

With either tool what is most important is that you say a short prayer first (can be as simple as 'please work') followed by the proper combination of four letter words (use all that you know) while doing the actual extracting. Do not forget this step or it will never work.

Stick that little one in a hole, turn it left until it snaps off and then try drilling it out with an 1/8 drill bit. That's the finest education you will ever receive in 'ez- outs'. Some of us have been thick enough to do it more than once.
