What the heck do I do with this?

Paint in my garage is peeling all the way to the drywall. How do I handle this? If I paint it will peel. If I try to peel it all of it will take me a couple of years. I have heard to "scrape what will come off" but that seems like a big waste of time.

Paint usually peels because of moisture. Is it just the ceiling or are the walls also peeling? Check the drywall/sheet rock that is on the ceiling. If it is damp, you will need to find and fix the roof or you will be re-painting almost as soon as you finish re-painting. After fixing the leak, it would probably be best to replace the sheet rock that got wet.

If there is not a leak, there might have been contaminants on the surface that prevented the paint from adhering to the surface.

Not sure where you live but what about freezing temps? would that make paint peel?

It is peeling because I heat in the winter and there is zero insulation. So, not water to the point of ruining the drywall. Just a moisture issue with the heat hitting the cold air.

So, I need to redrywall and insulate?

I would say if the drywall isnt wet or damp to me the easiest way to remedy the problem would be to lay 1/4" drywall right over whats existing and finish it and paint. You could try scraping the paint but I dont know that it will look good even after repainting unless you skim coated it and then theres still the possiblity that it might peel again.

I think Rick has the right idea. Or you could even go with sheets of 1/4" OSB or even 5.2mm Lauan for a more cost effective approach.

no miracle cures out there eh? Really hate to redrywall the whole thing... But, if I do, I would probably lean towards tearing out the old to put insulation and vapor barrier of some kind.

Any roofing guys able to tell me the "right way"to redo this if I do pull it out. Is insulation enough to get rid of sweating issue, or is a barrier of somekind needed. Also, would a roof cap help mitigate the issue? By this I mean the vent that gets placed along the apex of the roof.

Tear it out, insulate with vapor barrier and replace the sheetrock.

How about before you go whole hog you just try an experiment? It doesn't look like the drywall was even primed; it would be very difficult for primer to peel away exposing the bare paper face of drywall.

I'd suggest buying a decent primer, maybe one of the Kilz products, and painting two of the bare spots. Leave one in primer, and topcoat the other one with whatever paint you want to use. Oil based products would work better than latex.
