Hey folks, picked this big guy up at a garage sale today and figured it was worth somthing. It is a Morse 1 1/2" - 11 1/2" pipe die, it appears unused but has a layer of surface rust. I could not find another one on the net. Thanks for any help.

I'm no expert on this but I picked up some NOS pipe taps for internally threading pipe at a garage sale awhile back. The biggest was 2". Thought they would be worth more than they were. I think I sold all of them to another GJ'er for $100.

Brand new, taps are pretty expensive. Our shop has a whole **** ton of them we haven't used in years. I remember many a day with a large tap, 24 inch crescent wrench, a long pipe and a dead center to hand tap parts....

How much is steel scrap going for in your area? What does that piece weigh?

Far as I can tell, the RIDGID pipe threading die styles are what is being currently produced by all of the major threading equipment manufacturers. Your die will not fit any of those machines or hand threaders.

I've never seen someone cut threads with a bare die like that. I think they are meant more as chasers and the square drive on it is meant to be used with a pipe wrench.

That belongs in the WTF thread. The package says "a gulf and western manufacturing co" and the state of manufacture is Massachusetts...

Maybe $5.

Professionals aren't going to touch a rusty old die that looks like it came over on the Mayflower. That leaves the g-sale crowd.

The Morse family has a cool museum near winter park Florida. Sorry I Can't help you with the pricing but cool piece...

He has one of the largest Tiffany glass collection on display in the world as well as a ton of American artifacts and pottery. The man made an absolute fortune quite an interesting story...

Agree with some above. To the right guy likely $10 but he would have to have the die holder to use it. Very small audience.

I will also disagree with some above, most taps and dies are not all that expensive, depending on size and quality.

I agree with others, pretty much nothing unless there is some obscure collector value. Too large for DIYer's and industry purchasers aren't interested in the used market. I think Superior and Reed were the last manufacturers for Uni(?)Dies and holders. I'm not even sure if they still make them though. More industrial pipe fitter rather than basic plumbing although Sears used to rebrand Reed kits into the 70s.
