What the heck is this?

Picked this up from one of the local scrap yards, they had no idea what it was....found it laying with a bunch of stainless pipe. Its made from 316 SS, and is roughly 4.75" long. The square end is 1x1", and the tapered collar is around 2" in diameter. It has a threaded hole on the 1" square end, I believe is 3/16-18 pitch. Its solid stainless, and pretty heavy....any guesses?

My guess would be that it's the lower part of a handle that locks some sort of chuck in place. The bolt holds the actual handle. The bottom square when turned, locks the chuck.

I'll be anxious to know what it really is.

Might be some sort of drive coupling for a machine. The bill beneath it will be the hourly minimum wage if the Dems win the election.

That's a $20 bill. Very rare if you are married with children.
As said, a machine part. Being 316SS, probably for food processing.

This looks to me like a part of a ball valve. A stem to be precise. The actuator or handle would affix to this. I might be wrong but it looks identical to a ValveItalia item.

I figured it was part of a valve too. Big ol' handle goes on the square end, whatever is being turned goes on the other.

Well I stand corrected, it has been identified!

reminds me of a valve stem for a larger butterfly type valve.

Until I went back and looked at it again, I also thought it was the upper stem for a larger size WECO type flapper valve, probably 12" or larger.

BUT, the square section of all the valve stems I have seem have a scribe mark to show the position of the valve disk, if the handle is removed, so that the position of the handle will indicate if the valve is open or closed. and the oblong end should, I would think, be square to at least two of the edges of the upper part.

it is a safe pin that is tied with others, to open all the pins at the same time.????

It is the stem from a industrial ball valve. The narrow end keys into the ball, Square end is for the handle. Installs from inside the body, Shoulder prevents it from blowing out of the body.
