I had a big chain lube shop bust out my drain plug in a jiffy...
They ended up getting me a new oil pan after alot of deliberation with their customer service. After that experience I went back to changing my own. I should've known better I know a few guys that like to play mechanic on the weekend get jobs there. I would never let them touch my vehicles lol

Anyway op sounds like you know your stuff and have greatly outgrown your current employer and need go somewhere that will challenge you. Best of luck on your interview

Giving the other guys the benefit of doubt, I'd take a guess that they got scolded at one time when somebody left a drain plug loose, lost oil and the shop had to pay for a reman engine. Now the policy is to make sure they are "TIGHT."


Only taking a guess though.

Thanks for the well wishes. I had 3 interviews lined up. First one I sat down while they were with a customer. After hearing the way he talked down to the customer, and how he told her that her car which she claims to drive less than 5k miles a year would blow up if she did not get a transmission flush, I decided not to even take the interview, got out of there in a "Jiffy."

Second was at the Chevy dealership. He was interested in having me start asap. But he wanted me to inspect cars and upsell customers. Because his lube techs couldn't speak English. Sorry I want to be a Tech, not a SA. So I passed there too.

Third was a very small Indy shop. Like 3 tiny bays small. Almost looked like it was built in a storage complex. The owner was the coolest most down to earth person I have spoken to in Cali in a long time. They stay busy, and they do EVERYTHING. So I'd have the opportunity to learn more than lube and tires. No immediate commitment, but hopefully I will hear some good news tomorrow. Because even though it was a tiny, ******, hole in the wall place. To me it was perfect.

The drain plug on my Chevy Sonic is so cheaply made that I keep spares on hand (even though they are like $12 from GM). It's a 10mm head and I can EASILY see someone wiping that out.

And you were questioning my skill set? LOL. How about stop being a hack and get some talent? You won't need spare parts on hand then.

(It's like the "manager" at a certain Lube place that starts with a "J", no names mentioned, who directed his pit monkey to replace the (factory) 20W20 oil in my Mercedes' 4 speed gearbox with 85-140, because that oil was "so think it was obviously worn out", and then mentioned it to me (lightly) as I was leaving they "topped off" the transmission...)

If you can afford a Mercedes, you can afford to have your maintenance done by the dealer where the proper lubricants are in stock and the personnel are trained to do the job properly. It took me one visit to Jiffy Lube to cure me, and I stood next to the car and made sure there were no shenanigans going on.

My dealer has a separate dedicated section that deals with minor maintenance issues and does it reasonably quickly, so that's where my car goes now.

The best torque wrenches for drain plugs are snap-on combination wrenches. They will cut into your hand and tell you when you're getting the drain plug tight enough.
