I am pricing out some galvanized corrugated steel for my garage ceiling. it will be secured to the trusses on 24" centres. What thickness would you buy? I don't want it really thick and heavy but I don't want a flimsy mess either.

The options are
0.018"
0.024"
0.030"
0.036"
0.048"

I was thinking 0.030"????

There are two profiles I am looking at

Something like this

24_7-8corrugated.jpg

and something like this
(the peaks and valleys would be the same width)

I think the second would look a little better

Lets hear your advice.

I think all my siding is .026 /.029 or something like that, from Vicwest. I would think that you could use .030 supported on 2 ft centres with that profile and not have any issues from handling, or insulation loading on the top. Most manufacturers have specs listed on their web sites. Vicwest and Westman are two I have purchased over the years.

Any guesses what would have a better shine galvanized or zinc plated?

What do you guys think of the profiles?

Galvanizing is a zinc coating over steel. You do not want galvanized steel for your interior, it turns a very dark gray over time. I would recommend painted white.

I had the interior of my steel building in raw galvanized panels and after about ten years they had to be painted. It got very dark inside the building. Preparing and painting galvanized steel is very difficult and time consuming.

I vote for #2.

They offered zinc plated or actual hot dip galvanized.
I have seen lots of pics of guys who have done their ceilings in galvanized and it looks great. Most say they love it.

They may love it right after they install it, but do they still love it several years later? Not trying to talk you out of doing it, just wondering how they like it several years later after it turns a darker color.

As I said earlier, zinc plating steel is called galvanizing! That is two different types of galvanizing, hot dip galvanizing is what they normally used on water buckets. It has a greasy feel to it when new. This is the most difficult type to paint, you will find most professional painters will pass on this one.

You are correct in that it looks great when new, I was impressed with my building when it was new, but years later it was a painting nightmare.

In the end you will choose what you think is best for you, just trying to relay my experience with raw galvanized metal.

I definitely appreciate your experience. If it's going to look like hell down the road then it's not worth doing. I may have to go with white. I wanted to stay away from white but....

Here is 29 gauge (.0172) from Lowes and my rafters are 24" on center. I like it but would actually think about 24 gauge to help with some of the sagging.

I purchased mine from Vicwest as well, I went with 0.030" and have a very similar profile as the first picture for my ceiling.. I also have steel with a similar profile to the second picture but with a little more width on the peaks as wainscoting roughly 4' high around the base of the garage. The width of the peaks helped when it came to mounting new outlets and avoided a ton of trim work with the steel. I really love the galvanized look, but due to the fact that I have a really high ceiling in the garage I wanted to brighten the whole area up. So I ended up going with a semi gloss white, along with 4 Lithonia dual bulb T-8 fixtures and Philips 6500k daylight bulbs. The output is great and I'm able to work without any glare from the steel and zero shadows.. Highly recommend the white depending on what you'll be doing out there!.

Most roofing tin around here is Galvalume, which looks like regular galvanized, but it doesn't weather. I'm going to use white in my shop, and Galvalume in the finished great room on the other end of the barn. We did the roof of our house in 5V, which is an old-fashioned look. The big box stores carry regular galvanized, but it is cheap, thin, and way over priced compared to a real supplier.

JMO but that sounds like the base metal is rusting due to cheap galvanizing. I've taken down any number of tin farm buildings after several decades of unheated use and if the plating is good then it should look basically the same throughout its life.
