You know,,,,,,,,,,,, I didn't read most of the thread at first. I just gave my answer.
But I decided to read it all. Really disappointed in all the douchbaggery.

Some seem to have a REAL problem with the terms "maker space" and "man cave". OK, if you don't like the terms, that's great. But leave the idiotic remarks and name calling at the bar.
So you think a man cave is something that is in a basement, next to the washer/dryer, or a place that someone has but doesn't really do anything??
Here, does this look like it's a place that nothing is done?
A hoist that has been completely rebuilt, a plasma table likewise, a powder coating oven that was designed and built from the ground up. Not to mention numerous wood and metal projects. And an occasional transmission rebuilt.

So, I'll match my sissy man cave or whatever the hell I want to call it to your testosterone overdosed GARAGE, any time!

Mine is a Garage/workshop. Cars, truck and motorcycle parking make it a garage. Tools, equipment and supplies make it a shop.

Not a cave, it's not dark damp and smelly.

My maker space is the area of the kitchen counter where the coffee maker is situated.

Simmer down, it's called an opinion and we all know what those are like! I'll address the second one as that is my general thoughts. That view was derived from the TV shows where they transform a room giving it no other purpose than to entertain. My garage is not for that which is why I refuse to use the term.

I completely respect you choice of name for your place and that you actually use it. When people generalize here as I did and you yorself just did it doesn't mean the finger is pointed at anyone in particular, just voicing our views.

A bed, couch, chair, wherever I end up falling asleep from exhaustion.

To me its a shop, where work is done, motorcycles repaired/modified, things are fabricated and built. A garage is more like where people store their vehicles, bicycles, kids stuff, etc. My wife always points out any house with the garage open that is perfectly clean, barely anything on the walls or floor, maybe a lawn mower. I point out those garages belong to people who do nothing in a garage, build nothing, repair nothing, fabricate nothing. For those people the garage is simply an area to park their vehicles inside.

My haven? Well, it isn't may shop or garage because they are the shop or garage. I certainly wouldn't call it my "haven". My down stairs office is more of a haven.
My garage is more of a hang out. I like to go out there, but it isn't my place to go relax and unwind.

You'd be fooled at our house. The garage is neat and fairly empty. Not even a lawn mower. BUT- I have a 28 x 48 barn that's chock-full of stuff and activity, plus a shed, where the lawnmower lives.

To me:

Garage - somewhere you (theoretically) park cars, and house tools and stuff. Multipurpose space.
Shop - Dedicated place for tools and working on stuff. Probably not for parking daily driver vehicles.
Man Cave - Has memorabilia on the walls and probably couches and a TV. More of a "hang out" space than a working space.
Maker Space - Shared space for various makers to use the tools in there.

I also like the term "toy box" for a garage with some nice and fun vehicles parked in it.

I have 2 pole buildings. The older one my wife and I call the shop and the newer one the garage. They are so named to a avoid confusion. The shop is where all the tools reside and I have room in it for doing repairs, storage of my tractors and parking my pickup truck. The garage is where the two daily driver cars are stored and our motor home is stored.

I'll be downstairs.

I have a work area in the basement and a door to the garage. My son has his work area and my wife has a separate craft room - still called the "Wii Room" 5+ years after the Wii exited the building.

I have a 10 x 14 shed in the back yard for lawn tools.

I had a "Snickarbod" sign made after I read the book "The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning". My understanding is that it's Swedish for Toolshed. Right now it's hanging in the family room but it will eventually hang in my workshop when I get one.

I'm also in the camp that despises the term "Maker, or Maker space".
I'm a boomer and when I went through the public school system some form of exposure to "industrial education" was required for all students. Industrial education was eventually removed from almost all public education curriculums, and so many people were never exposed to basic tools, materials, and procedures or processes that are common in industry. So many people are just clueless.

I attended a business meeting where we were discussing financing new machinery. One of the lenders young representatives asked why we needed to have a machine to manufacture specialty bolts, why couldn't we just order them. This young person had absolutely no idea where things came from.

Makers are the generation of folks that never received any form of industrial education that have now had the epiphany that they can make things instead of buying things.

I have a shop, don't get me started on "Man Cave"

I have a 2 attached ‘garage’. I have a ‘pole barn’ for tractor, mower, UTV., and I have a ‘shop’ for my tools, a lift, big bench for projects. It’s my SHOP.

Never heard the term maker space. I call mine Blake’s Driveway Garage because I have too work on stuff in my driveway because I don’t have a garage at home unfortunately. I do have a basement full of tools and shop equipment too like work benches and a press and a grinder and jacks and Jack stands. I do take stuff inside frequently off the cars to work on or do whatever I need to do to it.

You'll get there. I too started with working outdoors at my parent's house. I had a small corner of the farm's tractor garage that I cleared to keep my toolbox and could fit a small lawnmower or snowblower inside but anything automotive had to be worked on outdoors. I remember in the winter time suiting up in insulated coveralls and working outside on vehicles for extra money. I worked on friends vehicles and anything I could for extra money to purchase more tools. Eventually I had a shop of my own after my wife and I got married and we had a place of our own and now a much larger shop at our new home but it takes time and dedication/drive. Slow and steady wins the race so keep at it.

It is the GDS Skunkworks...GDS = "Gotta do sumpthin"

I wrote this in another Thread...

"I cringe when I here the word Man Cave.

I picture a guy in Flip Flops, Shorts and a Bowling Shirt with a full set of Snappies, a new sports car...and does know anything about either one.

My thoughts...

I have a shop...period!!! It comes with the sights, sounds and smells of a Shop where things get dirty and then cleaned up.

The Skunkworks is preferred. The Office is the Design Center...lots of trinkets here and there, a couch, a Bathroom with a Urinal for the weekend Beer Drinking contests...and lots of things on the walls.

Call it a Man Cave and you will be corrected once. Say it again you'll be asked to leave...:rocker:
"

and this...

"LOL...my Wife's decorator calls my shop a "Man Cave" ...just say'in...I hate those words...

Within The Shop I have designated rooms...

The Car Shop
The Machine Shop
The Office
The Chitter
Cold Storage
Utility Room
The "Gungeon"

They are all well lit, clean and dry...not sure where Cave would even come in???

Who knows?
I call it the shop as no vehicles are kept there unless they're being worked on.

In a nod to the YouTube channels "Mustie1" and "Watch Wes Work", I've started referring to the lift as the "operating table" and describing the repair as either "putting it under the knife" or "getting it into surgery". Somehow I think these terms will be in permanent usage from here out. They seem to fit pretty well.
