What to do with a busted compressor?

OK so I have a craftsman oil-less 60 gallon 230v compressor for free. The pump blew the rods and a rebuild kit is 160. I don't need it now because I still live with my parents and my dad has a rather large compressor.

Id rather not rebuild that pump because the rebuild is so much money and oil-less pumps ****. So do I save it and use as an auxiliary tank? or get a new pump and keep it for when I move out? Or something else entirely.

I got it for free so I have nothing into it.It doesn't look like it would be a straight conversion to an oil fed pump but maybe someone has some recommendations?

Ill post pictures in a few minutes.

Sorry for the blurry pictures. You would think a brand new smart phone has a betr camera.

And rslaback, no I will most likely never need it as there is an 80 gallon already hooked up. It would be a why not kind of thing.

You could mount a piece of heavy channel to the saddle and install a real compressor on it.

Yup. Make your own frankencompressor out of it. With that tank, you want to stay single-stage (check plate on tank - is probably 165psi max).

Or use it as an additional air tank to whatever new compressor you end up with. With a smaller compressor and a very large tank volume, it can pretend to be a larger compressor for several seconds at a time.

MAC, Would you use that motor and just throw a pulley on and get pump? if so what pump? do they make any direct drive oiled pumps? or are they geared to step down the speed?

i have a oilless CM compressor PRO (220v/2stg/175psi/60gals) i always wants to take the unit ontop off and just use the tank and buy a nice top unit that is low rpm and can handle die grinders and the like without emptying the tank in 2 sec bc the pump/motor couldnt keep up. oh and quiet lol

yes, that tank and motor look good, definitely some value there if you like to weld and fabricate stuff! - it's a 3455 motor, single phase - you just need a cheap pump off ebay or craigslist and a big and small pulley.

If you can get a pulley on it and mount the motor across the saddle, I'd put a decent, belt drive lubricated pump on there. The tank and controls should still be ok for use.

I would sell it on Craigslist. Someone out there is probably looking for a good tank to replace one that has pinholes rusted through it.

Same tank I made my frankenpressor with. Bought the tank and then a 70's Cman 2 HP oiled compressor with a bad tank. 60 gallon compressor for $125. I have a second Cm an 2hp as I was going to double the cfm for another $50 but haven't needed too yet. That shelf mounted compressor in the other thread is exactly what I was planning for the second unit.

First look around for a compressor that has a bad tank.
Steal the motor and pump off it and put on yours.

Second, sell to someone with a compressor that has a bad tank

That tank would make a good bbq or smoker. When I find a nice tank, that's my plan.

I had one of those craftsman compressors years ago. I blew it up in 1 day running a buffer. Actually it was more like 3-4 hrs.
They're good for airing up bike tires or running a little hobby nail gun I guess.
