Looking for ideas how to use a dozen crates, other than put something in them and stack them. Make some cabinet/rack they slide into?
My wife came home the other day with a dozen crates, a road side find. They are all the same.

Fill them up with TOOLS! And if your wife complains, you can aways say it's her fault, cause she brought home the crates.

You could definitely do a cabinet of slide-in shelves.

I've never liked milk crates. Too bulky to deal with, and the shape does't ever seem to be quite right for what I want to store in them. And they don't nest if you want to stack/store them.

The shelves going on my back room storage wall are adjustable. I have lots of car parts I plan on removing out of the ratty looking card board boxes their in and putting them in something like you have there and hanging detailed labels on them about the contents.

Keep them, you will use them.

I have pipe bending shoes, spare PS pumps, spare alternators, exhaust off cuts, angle grinders*, extension cords, and even whisky bottles, (and others), that are awaiting return.

I also have those crates stacked, one upon another, open end out, on shelves. You can even make an "H" shaped wooden slide in insert for an additional shelf.

* I run about four grinders at a time....cut-off, wire wheels, etc, etc. Saves changing the purpose each time the chore changes.

If you are lucky enough to find really old crates, they will fit your LP's. (they finally got smart and down sized them)

Use half on one side, half on the other, turn them on their side, tie wrap them together, add a board in between and make a desk top. Use the containers for magazine storage or whatever else.

I keep my chains in a couple of them.
Others hold anti freeze and other various fluids.
Propane bottles but that has been mentioned.
Depending on what I am called out to do the crates makes it easy to load and unload and go again.

Run a pipe through them and make a wire dispenser. Feed the wire out of one of the slots to help maintain control.

Those are popular around here as people attach them to there ATV rack for storage !Lol!!!! I have two in the trunk of my car to keep my work tools from rolling around. Yeah I would build some kind of shelf with cubicles slightly larger for great storage in garage.:pimpflash

Hawk, already did the wire spool idea years ago when I did a lot of wiring, used it again this summer.
Like the idea of stacking some back to back putting some casters on it and a top for a light weight bench.

i have a double stack of those for large misc. parts. It works, but anything with a long bar seems to find a way to get the bar in the worst possible places...

Also, if the parts are particularly heavy, cut a piece of ply for the bottom or after some time it won't have a bottom...

I'm going to be a bit sacrilegious here. I would suggest that you set some in the middle if the shop and start filling them with all the stuff you have accumulated that is at least 5 years old. Things like the 1/4 full paint cans, the cutoffs from the wood saw, the bits of hardware from old appliances, old broken stuff waiting for a roundtuit. Once 2 or 3 are full send them off to the dump. Repeat the process every couple of months.

You will soon find a new level of freedom and space to enjoy.
