If you have any use for it, being it was your dad's, I'd keep it. If not, its a $100 box if you sell it.

I'd sell it on Craigslist unless you have real sentimental attachment to it. I have stuff that was my Dad's and grandfather's too, but they are also useful like hammers, ratchets, etc. I still have a small portable Craftsman toolbox that was my father's but it is well built and in use. Keeping it if you don't like using it will just clutter up shop space.

Keep the small top box somewhere else on benchtop for small hand tools.

Use the bottom for Welder cart/stand. Fab some square tubing that would bolt on that box.

Or you could mount grinder on top of that bottom box, or benchtop drill press or whatever.

Yes, I'd find a way to keep it.

Aint no way id get rid of the box. Thats a good sturdy set.
Pull them drawers out and fix the slides. Probably dont need nothing but a wire brush cleaning and a tad bit of light grease.

If it were my dad's box I wouldn't even think of selling it. Looks like it is still in great shape. Can you use if for light and/or infrequently used stuff? I've got sandpaper and such in my Craftsman box that I bought when I was in high school. I agree with you by the way about the slides...

I have similar situation I have a very very cheap toolbox,it was my dads first box I even remember when he got it.My father passed young age and I really hate to junk it as it reminds me of him when I look at it or open it,still had his stuff in it as he had it.
Tool box is out of place in my garage, might put it in the basement with some house needed tools.

I have a couple of boxes like that. One I keep all of my auto electrical tools and supplies in. Other one I keep all of my used/spare hardware in. One drawer for standard, one for metric, etc. Pulling open a drawer and seeing the hardware already spread out makes it easy to find what I need.

Have you checked into seeing if the original slides can be fixed, lubed or something? There are lots of replacement slides on the Net, perhaps give that a try.

Where do you live? I might buy it. Otherwise, I'd probably keep it. Can never have enough tool storage even if it's used to store garden tools or something.

Use it for your hardware. Get some cheap storage boxes to divide the drawers and fill it with nuts, bolts, and screws. The slides can be cleaned and waxed, or use dry lube like bike chain lube. Or replace them with ball bearing slides.

Another vote to keep it if it has ANY sentimental value at all.

My Dad passed away two years ago, and I now have his Craftsman box that he bought in 1957. I think of him every time I use it. I even have a couple of tools that I use quite often in the exact drawer they were in as I was growing up.

Lube up the slides and use the tool box for tool overflow from hanging around GJ too much or specialize it for electrical tools or plumbing tools etc.

If you don't have space is there a family member who you could pass it on to? If it's got sentimental value don't just sell it.

I've still got my 40 yo Craftsman yucky slide 3 box stack. I just lube the slides occasionally. I've got other bigger, better boxes now, but it was my first box that's been through hell with me. I'll never give it up.
So, if you're attached to it, use it for stuff you don't drag out that often and grease the slides.

If there is any inkling of sentimental value, keep it and pass it on to the next generation. That $100 bill that you sell it for will be long gone in a month and with it, the memories that box holds.

Take it from someone who sold a bunch of his dad's stuff because "I had no room" or "I'll never have a need for that" etc. I regretted it from the minute I did it...

Hold on to the box.

I gave my nephew my old boxes when I upgraded, he was 18 and had just got a business and was going to need some tools and tool storage. I have no children to pass them on to. I could of made a few bucks off of the stuff, But at least now a family member will have them.

+ 1 for, I couldn't sell it if it was my dads. Use it for lighter tools or parts, or the ones you don't use as much

Question then:
Dad conned his work into buying him a Craftsman Roll-around about 5 years before he retired. They said his boxes didn't fit the "new" company at the time. He brought it home when he retired and never did a thing with it. Should this be kept for sentimental reasons?
We are going to need to clean out the garage soon as we need to sell the property with Mom going in a Nursing Home.

bud i'm having to do the very same thing with the death of both my parents within four months, the garage is the worst to have to deal with trying to find places in my garage for almost everything from theirs. if it were me I would not get rid of that set of tool boxes i'm keeping a similar set and more.

My Dad just passed. I have his box, I'll die with it in my possession. It was the box I worked out of when I was a kid. He bought it maybe before I was born with tools in it from a second hand/pawn shop type of store.
Not sure how you could part with it, but then again I guess every story is different.

Middle of nowhere.
My dad's only tool box was the wooden one they made in FFA (late 30's). After he had a stroke, they moved. He want me to take the tools. So I did. Then bought a used gray Cman tool box for them.

My Dad died 30 years ago and he had a couple smaller boxes like that he was starting to fill back up because the majority of his tools had been stolen from his truck. I kept the tools, but having just moved into a small apartment, I "thought" I didn't have room for them. I sold them to a good friend of his with the promise that if he got rid of them, I could buy them back. He moved unexpectedly and they were gone. Sure they were cheap boxes, but it would have been nice to have them. I still have most of the tools I got from him, but it would be nice to have the boxes also.

My vote is to hang on to them, and as others have said, store hardware, overflow tools in them. If you aren't into tools, or boxes, give them to a family member who is, or maybe a younger person in neighborhood who is into stuff like that, and get him to work on your lawn equipment as part of trade. You both get something from the deal, and your Dad's stuff is still close.

If you are like most here on the forums, there is NEVER enough tool storage.......ever.
