Back when "they" announced R-12 freon would on longer be sold to individuals my dad went to Sam's Club and bought a 30lb tank of R-12 and and 30lbs of R-22. He had those things sitting around his garage for years and when he moved he gave them to me and I've been moving these heavy SOB's out of my way ever sense.

They've sat unused, sealed actually, for all these years and I'd love to get rid of them. Do you think an a/c guy would take these in trade for some work?

That R-12 is worth its weight in gold, I would sell it if you don't intend to use it, not sure about the R-22.

most AC shops will buy the tank from you because its virgin stuff
all the stuff they get now is recycled

I have 3 cases of cans that I still have, I have debated about selling them

Yeah, that R12 aged very well! It worth a premium price to alot of people. DO NOT give it away. Here's a quick link to an auto A/C board-tell them what you got and some will be running to your house for it. http://www.autoacforum.com/
R22 is still widely used in older commercial refrigeration equipment. Any people who work on that stuff would gladly take it.

R-22 is actually still for now being produced and is up around $180.00 a 30# jugg around here most residential systems are R-22 based although 2010 will put an end to that as they wont be able to sell systems with R-22 anymore so that can may go up in value . The R -12 as was said above is gold and at peak was going for around $1200.00 for a 25# jugg not sure what its going for today but could check and let ya know.

I think you aught to contact Al Gore and tell him if he doesn't buy the can from you for a "modest" fee you'll open the valve and blow a hole in the ozone.

Just crack the valve on the one and let it go to the atmosphere and watch the ozone disappear and we'll all get a good suntan. :)

Seriously, do a quick search on CL and you will see tons of ads for them.

Thanks Rick,

I'm not looking to make a big score but I do have an home A/C unit that I would like to replace soon. I would rather find a good A/C guy that would take my freon in trade for part of his work rather that just sell it outright for cash.

Any help on what would be a fair trade value would be appreciated.

Well the thing is the valuable one is R-12 which is an automotive refrigerant so I'm not sure how many HVAC guys why have much interest in it unless they intend to resell it themselves.

I guess I'll just have to check around. Back in the 90's I worked in a grocery store and all the big coolers/freezers ran on R-12 so I just assumed it was still refrigerant for older commercial systems.

I work with a company that buys virgin refrigerant. I am a project foreman for one of the biggest mechanical contractors in the country so I do a lot of business with them. They are EPA, ARI certified. My guess is that 30 lbs of R12 would net you around a grand after shipping etc. Not a bad check for a phone call and setting up shipping. PM me if you would like the info.

Creekrat R-12 is still used in some of the older walkin coolers and such and you can still buy it . I would call a few local HVAC companies and ask if they also do commercial refrigeration as well as that might make a differance on trading the R-12. On the other hand you might take Chevelle up on his offer as a grand would go well towards the reolacement of your HVAC system .
