What to do with Heat pump exhaust

Living here in Az we run the A/C quite a bit, I have 2 units, 1 for the house the 2nd in my Garage. The heat exhausted by them has a tremendous amt. of energy wasted into the air. That being said, I saw a show on "This old House" that had some kind of heat extractor that, 1, took the excess heat and somehow plumbed into a inground pool, 2,it also cooled the coils and thereby removed excess heat from the unit. Is there such a unit that does this? or was I viewing a Rube Goldberg idea?/ thoughts please, TIA

you could go with a water source heat pump and use the pool/hot tub as your heat exchanger.

Carrier used to make one called the "Hot Shot" that would go on the line from the compressor before the condenser and then hooked to the inlet on the hot water heater. It worked and I used it until I got gas water heater and then took it out. The suggestion of a water source heat pump would be the best choice for you. The engineering experience to convert regular heat pumps to water source would be expensive and still have no warranty or assurance that it would work correctly.
