What to do with vice?

I have a Chas. Parker 436 vice. This thing is huge. I would like to sell it. Should I re-paint it, or just sell. What would it be worth?

Be careful and don't undersell it. I don't know the exact condition but a 436 sold on Ebay maybe a year ago for over $1500. The seller was "matchless antiques" and they always get top, top, dollar. I sold a 435 for my buddy on Ebay for $350 and its was repainted. They are not abundant and I would guess there are a number of Parker collectors that might be interested. Its a beast of a vise!

A purist who is willing to pay a good price for it, will not want it painted, they will do it themselves in the proper colors. The non-purist who just wants a "big 'ole vise" could care less what it looks like and isn't going to pay what its worth.

Don't waste your time unless you intend to do it right.

agree with above if your not going to make it look original I would just sell it as is, collectors will want to see the original paint

Original paint allows collectors to see that there are no hidden repairs anywhere. For something like a vise, I would MUCH rather see the original paint.

Speaking of repairs...do I see a crack in the housing by the slide in your 4th photo? Just to the right of the "P" and "A" of the word "Parker" in the photo? If so, it's not the end of the world, and the vise is still valuable. But collectors won't pay super-high prices for cracked vises. It is STILL a valuable and very desirable vise.

my issue with the "original" paint is Leaded paint. my vises, except 1 was made in early 80's, all 40+ years old. now I have a kid, I just don't want to keep leaded paint in the house.

i doubt that a little kid will be allowed to play and chew on a vice
and vices made in the 80s are less than 40 years old to be more than 40+ years they have to be made pre 1971

On here or on EvilBay might be a good bet if you are willing to ship it. Your local Craigslist if not. What are you trying to get out of it?

The lead base paint was outlawed in 1977-however, the paint was stock piled long after 77 and was used on many items. The big "C" still uses lead based paint on many items-so that "New' vice that is imported from far-far away could realalistically be contaminated with the wrong paint!! They were caught, not to long ago importing toys that were pained with it!! I also agree, most generally most kids won't be chewing on a steel vise-during a teething session!!
