I have a couple benches in my shop that are homemade and have a plywood top. No biggie they work fine.

But I just got some counter tops dropped off here at the house that came from an auction. There are 3 of them one has a hole in it for a sink, the other 2 do not. all 3 are different sizes and colors.

My old benches are oil soaked, stained etc. but again work fine. But the counter tops would look better and they have a back lip on them.

Should I build new benches from the counter tops and replace the old ones or just leave the old ones????

thanks.

You need to build a new bench...But reserve one of the old crappy benches for doing your dirty work! You wont want to mount your vise on/pound the hell out of a nice new countertop...ask me how I know ;)

nope not enough counter top to replace the plywood. and the ply wood isnt as wide as the counter top as in front to back. And the counter top isnt brand new its just new to me. I am just trying to make the shop look nicer and maybe a litter fancier than just a wore out old shop. maybe I am thinking too much into this.

If I correct on this, your new countertops are standard kitchen countertops at 2' deep and your bench is probably around 30". Build a raised portion at the back for the lip to go against, then you can add holes or whatever to it to put screwdrivers or pegs to put sockets on. That way while your working, your tools will be at the back and you won't be sacrificing a bench.
