Congrats OP (original poster) . . . . you've scored one leg of the GJ Tri-Fecta . . . . . . . a Craftsman block grinder like that fully restored is AWESOME. Take your time and fix that baby up nice. It will be something to pass on to your kids.

See the thread - - - - - - Let's see your Craftsman Block Grinders
Post up some pictures there of your score and link back to this thread. You'll also see some beautiful examples of fully restored C-Man block grinders.

Now you need to work on other 2 legs of the GJ Tri-Fecta . . .
. . . . . . Craftsman 100 or 150 drill press . . . or similar old school drill press
. . . . . . Wilton bullet vise or similar old school USA vise

Yes . . . you earned the accolades of . . . YOU **** !!!! .

Cool I'll check that thread out!

I'll keep my eyes open for a drill press I wouldn't mind having one of those as well!

I did actually purchase a Wilton vice recently but unfortunately I was un-educated on that subject and got a new Chinese version :( I got a decent price on it I think so I decided to keep it but that's part of the reason I started this thread was to get educated before wasting money.

Any good threads on those drill presses?

^ ^ ^ There are countless threads on awesome restorations of old Craftsman and other vintage drill presses. GJ login Frank Lee is bona fide guru on Craftsman DP's so you could start with Advanced Search for his login and Craftsman drill press.

Also, can use Google to drill deep into GJ website:
EXAMPLEs:
> > > > > GOOGLE > > > > Craftsman 100 drill press site:garagejournal.com
> > > > > GOOGLE > > > > Craftsman 150 drill press site:garagejournal.com

Combined with the C-Man block grinder threads, you'll have Hours or DAYS or reading for all those threads !!! :D . . ;)

I'm on the same path... I've got the 150 DP, and I think a vise is next... I just haven't been able to bring myself to pay $100+ for a 3" bench vise yet.

Good snag on the grinder, though! My work has two grinders (neither are Cman) and they just pulled all the grinding wheels off and replaced with wire wheels :shocking::dunno:

I got her all apart and cleaned inside and out, it's amazing the quality of this thing for how old it is! When I flipped it over it says Feb. 1964 and it works like it's right out the box.

I'd really like to make her look new again so I'll be looking for some help/hints/tips. What paint should I use that will be very strong, how should I prep before painting?

Here's how she's sitting currently waiting for paint!!

I was looking at this grinder a few days ago. If I didn't already have two of them I would have bought this. Nice job and congrats.

At an auction last summer I picked up 4 bench grinders. 3 were Dayton 3/4 hp 8" grinders with one on a real nice cast iron stand. The 4th one was a big baldor 3 phase grinder on a stand that was 3 or 5 HP cant remember now as I sold it. I kept one of the Daytons and sold the rest but it is an awesome grinder. All the power you could want, well at least for what I do. That Baldor was a pig though, big ole heavy sucker.

I realize the "You ****" label given to those fortunate few who find deals we all wish we could have, is based on disappointment, envy and a little selfish greed. But I prefer to give a "thumbs up" to others luckier than I, rather than the so-called "you ****."
It costs us nothing to applaud someone else's good luck and skill, and what's wrong with a little bragging rights?

It is the GJ equivalent of a thumbs up....
It is the ultimate thumbs up....
It is the cat's meow...
It is the gold standard of compliments...
It is the paragon of excellence..
The jelly in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich...
The high water mark....
But if you don't agree that's fine

Ok I got her home!

Now if you guys could help me find an original light and piece of "shatter proof" glass that would be awesome!

You don't need a new shield, just glass. Take the shield down to your local glass company and have them replace the glass, I had a pair done last year for $10. Also, there were at least two different size metal framed shields like yours, and OEM on the 1/3 HP like yours are considerably smaller than the ones that were on the bigger grinders. So measure yours and ask for measurements if you go shopping.
