What to put behind workbench (under upper cabinets) - Pegboard, Slatwall, or nothin?

In other words - hide all the tools in drawers, or organize them in plain sight?

Waiting on delivery of my Newage Pro cabinets, to be installed in my garage as below (top left):

(I might end up with the second large cabinet on the back wall instead of the left, but I digress)

The stem wall extends about 18-24" in height along both walls, so the base cabinets will be offset by about 2" from the wall. I'm going to add a roughly 2-3" lip of the work surface (bamboo) along the back edge of the workbench to clean up the look (and prevent anything from falling in the gap.

I plan to go metal pegboard but that probably limits me to 18 or 20" high sections due to availability, so it'll have a couple inch gap at the top edge.

The wall is textured unfortunately so won't be a super clean look with nothing behind it.

One caveat - I can make a ton of custom, clean mounts to hold tools with my high end 3d printers at work, so I'm not stuck with typical crappy pegboard hooks only.

I had pegboard. While it provided a nice place to stage tool sets for multiple workstations, I always wound up getting covered in goop from some drooling corpse, while trying to reach tools behind the victim. This shop is almost all drawers, with bare wall between the cabinets and benches.

Yeah, that’s a big problem for a lot of people. :)

What you hang depends on what you do at the bench most of the time.

I used to be real heavy into electronics....hence, the wall would have been storage bins for electrical parts....etc.

Now....all of my electrical stuff is in a couple of small tool boxes....fishing tackle type.

I'm in the process of doing some major clean up and organization in the garage....and about to put a top on my work bench (I have a connection for SS fab)

As for now, about the only thing that will go on the wall might be screw drivers...and for that, I'll most likely use one of those little racks.

I have the wife saving pasta sauce jars. I have a **** load of bolts and screws I don't want to get rid of. Organizing them in jars seems a good option right now....I'll most likely make a shelf to line them up on under the cabinets

I bought metal pegboard too, to put up behind my bench on the wall. I plan to put a few commonly used tools on the easily reached bottom section: screwdrivers, pliers, one metric combo wrench set, couple of hammers, etc. Everything else will be in the toolbox.
The top half will be for display of my favorite oddball and classic tools that I collect for fun.

Congrats on the new cabinets, post some pix of the installation process and the finished result so we can all be thoroughly envious.

ddawg16, I avoid using glass jars for storing anything in the garage. I had this little incident where I dropped a mayo jar full of 10,000 screws off my bench onto the concrete floor. It exploded like a grenade. Broken glass and screws flew everywhere. As I was picking out the big glass pieces from all the screws, and trying to remember where I might have a magnet, I decided glass containers don't work in the garage. Hope I helped you avoid a big mess.

I like pegboard for certain things. I just did a section behind a door, and hung up a bunch of things too big for drawers- long rulers, levels, drywall and framing squares, etc. Over my main bench, I have 'bait' tools, such as beat-up screwdrivers for the wife to abuse, while my good stuff is safely hidden away.

As I have limited floor space I like to have as much as possible hanging on the walls. I got 2x1m pre holed sheets of 1mm sheet metal which I distanced out about two inches from the wall. Buy or make hangers as I need them.

Don't worry, I have a separate Dexter studio for that.

Returning to the thread topic... I use pegboard

There is **** hanging there that I should put away in a box or just toss. But it’s a handy place to keep a few screwdrivers, nut drivers, combo wrenches, pliers, hammers, tape etc.
I like hanging paint brushes to keep the bristles straight.

For me it'll be both - stored away behind doors and drawers which will help keep things cleaner, and some high use items out and available but in a clearly designated space.

I'm using plywood. Total flexibility in terms of mounting items to it. I have a small space so being uncluttered is a primary directive - a place for every thing and everything in it's place.

I'll hang odd (see track saw rails) items higher up and frequently used items lower down. It's a work in progress:

I've been able to lift quite a few organization idea here on GJ.
