I have 3 of these that I would like to replace with a 4ft led or something better. What ever I use I want to remove the current fixture and hard wire into the current location since they are on a switch, and surface / flush mount to cover the hole.

What are some reasonable priced recommendations?

Thanks
Ed

Me personally I would remove the fixture and replace it with a duplex receptacle. Gives you the option to plug in two fixtures and hang them in different places where you need the light. There will be those along to tell us that all garage receptacles need to be GFCI protected.

What Larry said. I am putting up 16 4ft long LED lights in my shop now. We're installing the ceiling this week but once that is up I will be installing duplex outlets in the ceiling and plugging the LEDs into the outlet. My shop is a pole building (see my avatar). It had 4 8ft florescent shop lights in it when I bought so it also had the wiring in place. I just pulled the florescent off the ceiling and gave them away.

As for light quality, we've been working in the building doing insulation and walls so we needed light so we temporarily installed 3 of the LED and we had great light, better than the original florescents. I can only imagine the light I'm going to have in there once I fire up all 16. I like bright lighting when I am working.

BTW, I got mine at COSTCO on sale for $20 apiece but you can fine them any place now for about the same price.

Yeah, I just dont know if I want cords running across the ceiling.
Can the 4ft lights from the big box stores be hard wired if I removed the cord?

I don't really like the cords either but I don't see a way to do it with the ones I got from COSCO. I think I'm going to use saddle clamps and zip ties to dress them up.

I have used the cheap (under $20) fluorescent fixtures from HD. Remove the ballast, pull the old wires out of the tombstones wihile twisting, add a couple of feet of wire, and double ended led bulbs picked from the sticky. Less power and much more light than the original fluorescents plus no more replacing tubes and ballasts.

make a bracket and mount them right at the I-beams... or under the shelves...

for the electrical round hole, I used a metal cover, drill a 7/8 hole for the 1/2" knockout strand relive and just cut the plug on the 3 prong plugs... on those costco shop lights... if you wanted fancy... they sell those Flat Flat flat panel fancy LED light panels now as well.. it's only about 1" or less thick flush to the ceiling.

Do it right or don't do it at all. Doing it right means complying with code.
