Why would you think they need to have "Safety Toes" They have no OSHA in China or EPA, for that matter, retirements ,insurance, unemployment tax's,workmans comp, union dues, ect. This is what makes $1 screwdrivers.

That is a myth. China has all of that, through one Ministry, or multiple ones depending on the specific point your talking about.

The problem isn't that they don't have the problem is, trying to enforce everything throughout a country with as large of a population without it costing a ****** fortune.

Another thing is, if you do get caught doing something really wrong, your just one of 4,000 people executed by China every year, and just a number to them. Including the 14 Billionaires that were executed for crimes between 2003 and 2011.

It's like the big stink about Foxconn another myth really, 18 suicides and attempted suicides, in a company sounds like a big deal, but in the end, they had 1 million employees that year. Think about that a MILLION employees, that makes the suicide rate go to 1.8 per 100,000.

Suicides only not attempted suicides ...
China is at 22.23 per 100,000.
America is at 12.0 per 100,000.
Canada is at 11.5 per 100,000.

When you think about it this way, sure 18 employees sounds like a lot, but compared to the people around them, and even us here, it's a lot lower then it should be technically.

I remember in the 50's/60's hearing the same song about Japanese cars and manufacturing never being accepted as quality here in the states.

Before WW2 we were all told that Jap planes were made from bambo, and rice paper.......

Anybody remember the Zero?...

If they have an EPA, they're understaffed... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollution_in_China

Yes and no, there is the issue that they have 4 times the population, and have went from nearly the stone age after Mao ruined the country, to now a nearly first world country in 35 years.

People still use coal in China to heat their homes and cook while the next town over uses electricity for all of that! :eyecrazy:

Yes there is a lot of smog, but per capita the numbers are not as bad, all greenhouse gas emissions for China per capita is 1/4th of what is is here etc. But when you have 2/3rds of all of Canada's population living just in Beijing it all adds up quickly.

Imagine two and a bit New York City's worth of population still using things like coal, it was bad when we did it just half a century ago century ago and it wouldn't be pretty now.

Their main issue is, the Chinese government has been put on the path of rapid industrialization, forgoing what we think is "normal" environmental issues due to the risk it might hamper Chinese development into a first world nation as quickly as possible.

As long as it never got bad enough to be a serious issue for the country's population it was brushed aside. Basically progress at nearly any cost. Doesn't sound like a communist country now does it? :willy_nil
