What tool do I need for these wide split fasteners? (pin/hook spanner)

hi guys.

first of all, i don't even know what these things are called.

i've come across these a few times in different forms, but basically they're nuts or threaded collars that go on the inside or the outside of a threaded shaft. they're driven by slots or dimples 180° apart situated on their top face or outer edge.

here's an exterior example that has slots on its top face but could also be driven from the edge:

it reminds me a bit of the spanner drive system:
https://www.google.com/search?q=spanner+drive&tbm=isch
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_screw_drives#Spanner

a punch (or screwdriver) and a hammer can help get a stubborn one moving. another obvious tool i've tried is needle nose pliers, but it's far from the perfect too for the job and doesn't always work.

what are these things called?

what tool(s) do you use? some kind of specialized pliers?

thanks, gents

Pin spanner will get most of them but when recessed I've had to make my own from an old socket and weld the studs to the outside.

For your first pic a purpose size spanner to use with slotted but as said a pin spanner would work. I have a couple of adjustable ones made by Armstrong but they are easy to make.

That tailcap brings back memories. I used to mod flashlights for a long time. On flashlights I would use round nose pliers or a spanner like this (too lazy to dig mine out & take a pic). They're made for camera lenses so only good for small/light duty applications.

Hey there darkzero - I thought your username looked awfully familiar - CandlePowerForums fellow member (I have a different username there)! I recently joined these forums after being led here (no pun intended) regarding hand/power tools reviews, etc. I still buy an occasional flashlight here and there when something interesting pops up - latest buys were the Lumintop FW1A and ReyLight Brass Pineapple on drop...

Anyways, I was thinking about the same style tool you pictured above to address the OP or maybe even various snap ring pliers with interchangeable tips.

Cheers,
Tim

i'm on CPF too (different username).

at Mohawk Dave's recommendation, i just tried out the circlip pliers i recently bought on an interior top-dimpled fastener just like in my second pic in the OP. that's a pic from the internet, but it's just like the thing on my Convoy S2+ 365nm Nichia UV-A flashlight. i had to take it apart to install a ZWB2 UV-pass filter, and it worked very well.

Alright pizza - another crossover user!

I also just thought about watch case back tools for threaded designs - especially those with only 2 drive pins...

Cheers,
Tim

It's probably been 7-8 yrs since I've bought a new flashlight with the exception of Milwaukee work lights. It was a hard habit to break.

I hear you on that "habit" - kind of like all the tools I see here that I never knew I needed! Okay - wanted is the more appropriate word but there are a lot worse things we could be doing with our money...

Cheers,
Tim
