OK, 60's Chevy, double wishbone, spring, external shock (inside spring), nothing special. I installed this spring as well as removed it years ago. I dig into my tools and all I have is the coil over external spring compressor, won't work. I'm searching for a tool and all I find are for McPhersons. What do you use? I can' remember what I did back then and can't find an appropriate tool available today.

I've had decent results loosening the control arm bolts, putting a floor jack under the control arm to compress the spring a bit, separating the lower ball joint and lowering the arm with the jack slowly until the spring is free. Installation is reversed. If you're not changing the springs, just removing and reinstalling, chain or use some heavy tie downs to keep the springs somewhat compressed...makes it a bit easier to re-install.

Or, grab a couple pieces of 3" x 3/8" flat bar of the appropriate length and drill a 1/2" hole through them, then use a long bolt or a piece of all thread w/nuts...after removing the shock, slide the plates through the coils and tighten the bolt/nuts to hold the spring compressed.

All I ever used to do was break loose the lower ball joint and push the spring in with a pry bar. Also have a floor jack under the lower ball joint to keep the lower control arm from moving.

Just a frame, so no weight to use the jack. I've done that before too. But not on this one. I did it without the body and engine. Just don't remember how. Thanks Prof. I saw those just wondered about someone with experience. using them.
