As I continue to build my tool collection, I was curious what types of tools that you guys have duplicates of or you see as being useful to have duplicates of?

When I wrenched for a living I kept enough tools at home to do most repairs. I still have my duplicate set. It consists of:
1/4 drive standard and metric sockets
3/8 drive standard and metric sockets
1/2 drive sockets in the most commonly needed sizes (3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 17, 18, 19, 21mm)
1/4, 3/8, 1/2 drive ratchets and some extensions for each
Combo wrenches in 1/4-3/4 and 8-19mm
Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
Slip joint, Channellock, needle nose, and side cutter pliers
Ball pein hammer and small and large prybars
Multimeter and wire stripper/crimper tool
All kept in a small Mac roller cabinet

Too many to even try to list in one go. Some are for convenience, some because they were good deals, some because you have to have two to do the job... (Combination wrenches, pipes wrenches, etc.)

Virtually everything - I've got the work set, the home set, the truck set, the Bronco set and the "mobile millwright" set.

Around here, I think the real question is; how many sets of duplicate tools do you have?

Well I'm trying to justify buying four identical sets of wrenches, pliers, etc to build two identical tool boxes with two of everything in each box.

Though for a hobbyist, that seems a bit eccentric.

Yes, I have duplicates! Almost everything I own I have at least 2 of either by design or because of CRS. Also I have tools at work and at home so duplicates keep me from having to transport tools from work to home.

Wrenches. I've got 50 wrenches hanging on my wall from 5/16 to 1 1/4, mostly Craftsman, some Mac, Proto and Cornwall.
Then I've got a set of Gear Wrenches mixed in with long-pattern Craftsman professional up to 1 inch on one side of my wrench drawer, and Craftsman long pro and some Snap-ons on the other side.

Two of every socket, 1/4-thru 1/2-drive, deep and standard, and several ratchets in each size.

I've got more than one ball pien hammer, but each is just a little larger than the last.

Clamps--C, locking pliers and Vise-grip. Can't have too many.
I have several electric drills.

Have a few multiples of different pliers.
Multiples of wrecking bars--large and small, plus a pair of Cats Paws.

Chisels.

Don't have multiples of screwdrivers or anything else.

I do a lot of wrenching with my friends and my son, so having multiples makes it easier to keep work flowing, rather than waiting for the other guy to get done using the tool, or spending time looking for where you set it down.

When I pull the last 9/16 wrench off the wall, it's time to stop and clean up.

I also have a full set of everything in my junkyard/race box.

Wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, and ratchets. Should probably thin the herd out a little now that I think about it.

I have at least two sets of 12pt sockets in just about all SAE and most metric sizes, probably six 3/8" drive ratchets, at least three of which are the same model, two 1/4" drive ratchets, two 1/2" drive ratchets, lots of redundant screwdrivers, etc. Mostly all hand tools. I do have several soldering irons too though.

I have at least three of most of the common sockets, end wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers etc. One set in the woodworking shop out back, one set in the garage, and another in the toolbox on the truck. The tool pouch that I use for electrical work also has it's own set of tools so none are ever borrowed and not returned to the pouch.

Probably the most unusual duplication of tools which I have is that I have a good floor model drill press in each of the two shops. Come to think of it I have a decent air compressor in both shops too.

Other guys have hit it: mostly everything.

Sockets in MM and SAE, deep and shallow, chrome and impact, 1/4 - 3/8 - 1/2. Plus some swivel impacts thrown in. I have duplicates of U-joints for each drive size b/c sometimes it's nice to have two ratchets setup with different sockets if I'm switching back and forth for some reason.

Ratchets of different lengths and head configurations (QR, non-QR, flex, round, pear, etc)

Screwdrivers. Different size adjustable, pipe, vise, needlenose, and groove pliers/wrenches.

I think wrenches are an important area to have duplicates. You need a standard length combo, long, deep offset, and ratcheting of each common size. Stubbys, flex ratchets, elbow ratchets, etc also exist, but I haven't found much use for them in my own work. Other guys love 'em.

I like this question it reminds me of asking the town drunk what duplicates he keeps at home and he replies "Why I keep every major brand of malt liqueur at home only in triplet form in case of emergency"....

Channellock Pliers
Vise Grips (Original)
Hex Wrenches...
and if I were to buy every power tool I saw at various tag sales, I would end up with a closet full of Black & Decker Circular saws. (Model 7301) Not sure why but this area is flooded with them.

I have a set in the basement, a set in the garage workshop, a set in the road case and a small set in the carry bag for doing repairs at the rentals. There are duplicates across all of these sets and the set in the garage has duplicates in it and in some cases duplicates of duplicates. the duplicatescover: wrenches, sockets, cold chisels, ball pein hammers, pliers, pliers, pliers, pipe wrenches, ratchets, more ratchets, multimeters, tape measures, hacksaws, screwdrivers, paint can openers (never have too many of these), taps and dies, drills etc. I hate having to go back and forth bewteen workshops. the tool set in the garage workshop fills two 41 inch roll cabs, 41 inch top chest, a side cb and a side top cab.

This is true for me also.

Another thing I have done is set up separate toolboxes for plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc. They all have channellocks, various pliers , screwdrivers, a hammer , a tape measure, and a few other things in addition to the specialized tools that go into each box.

When my brother had his rental houses, this let me get going on short notice for quick repairs.

I have my primary collection on the East coast in my C Man cab, but out here in KS I have a Napa EverCraft set (CR-V Taiwan but good warranty), on top of a bunch of other stuff I've added since moving here. I have no less than 5 sets of SAE combo wrenches and 2 sets of metric. Lots of screwdrivers...pliers....can't have too many?

Yup, that's my problem and I'm not even sure I could come up with a list of non-duplicates. :)

Would the same tool in different brands qualify as a duplicate? :)

I'm moe of a nail beater, hammers, tapes measures, and utility knives. But since I'm a used tool seller, I got lots of everything except Snap On, can't find it anymore?
