Getting ready to paint my 1500 sf shop. I used SLICK SIDE OUT OSB on walls and ceilings, turned out nice. I want to paint most of it white. What is the best paint for SLICK side OSB? thanks

I am using Exterior Latex (Clark + Kensington) purchased from Ace Hardware. I did use primer first.... so it covered well.

Any good latex or enamel paint will work. Prime it first though, gives the topcoat a better chance to "cover". I would suggest going with a semi-gloss to improve light reflection and the ability to "clean up". It DOES make a difference.

did mine like that last November. Oil base Kilz goes on like mayonnaise. Use a 3/4" nap roller.
Mine turned out great.

Ditto on a good hiding primer. If not the darker chips in the osb will bleed through. Even after your primer dries, you might have to spot prime any darker chips that bleed through the first coat. Did my top coat with SW pro 200 in 94 and still good as new. Used Dover white for a nice creamy white. Trimmed in a reddish color.

I did the same when I built my garage in 2002. It's held up well. The semi-gloss gives it a nice skin that's easy to wipe clean. I wash my truck in the garage and the walls sometime get wet and the latex has protected OSB well. It's amazing how much brighter the garage is with the walls and ceiling painted white.

This is one reason why mine is still bare wood. I priced out the Kiltz and cheap white top coat for 960 sq/ft walls and ceiling, got the number and said "screw that".

Kilz oil base....Back roll with 3/4" nap....Then I applied a enamel semi gloss as a top coat to match drywall with the same.
Be warned, Kilz smells something awful for a few days.

Kilz original (the oil based), is actually a very good primer for OSB.
Kilz odorless is an oil based primer that supposedly smells a little less (never used it).
Any good latex will go over Kilz, but for the first coat over the oil based primer I'd either use a cheap latex primer tinted to match your finish color, or a paint/primer in-one type paint.

Want to deal with peeling or color bleeding through in a few years?
Anyway, I don't care how cheap you can find 5 gallons of latex paint, but 5 gallons of Kilz primer is probably less.
Figure out your coverage, and you'll understand that using primer for the first coat (because nothing painted in just one coat looks good) is actually the cheapest option.
Want to put cheap latex on top of that, sure go ahead. The color won't be as well hiding (who cares, you're not painting over stripes), and may fade over time, but in some colors, that's not a big deal anyway.

What can I spray? I have 3000 sf to paint. I want a finish that will last
You can spray un thinned latex through an airless. It wastes a fair amount though, so I suggest the maximum recommended thinning for the paint that you decide on. I made the mistake of not priming the OSB first. 15 gallons through an airless on 960sf. 16ft. ceiling, and I still didn't have 100% coverage. OSB absorbs the **** out of white latex.

Like everyone recommended, I used oil-based KILZ when we built in 2009.
Airless sprayer, and back-rolled to even it out, and fill all depressions.
Topped it with Sherwin-Williams Promar 200 semi-gloss latex.
Looks as good today, as it did then.

I used Kilz water based primer and semi-gloss latex paint. It really sucked up the primer coat, and I laid down the paint fairly heavy. Worked just fine.
my shop garage is plain, no paint, yes white would reflex the light better but its a garage, for welding cutting. the wall don't deserved paint. not gonna spend 30 dollar a gallon just for pretty

Me too!. Heavy nap roller. Took two coats of prime and two coats of finish. The first coat of prime gets sucked in. Coverage on OSB is about half of what the can suggests you will get. I kept a cheap 2" throwaway brush handy to daub the spots the roller could not get into. Go to Harbor Freight and buy a box of disposable latex gloves. Kilz oil based is hard to get off your hands.

I did Zinnser Coverstain primer and Kilz Pro-X 370 Semi Gloss white on mine. 2 coats each with a 3/4 nap roller and couldn't be happier.
That stuff was so thick it was like rolling out cool whip. The Pro-X 370 covers really well and levels out nice. Looks almost as slick as sheet rock until you get up close to it.

I like the OSB texture, so smoothing it out is not important. Getting good light reflection is important. I found a few other threads, and KILZ oil/original and a good exterior semi gloss latex is the plan. I went to KILZ site and can be sprayed with a proper spray tip. I will post pics of the construction and interior finishing in a couple weeks. Thanks for all the information you all have shared.

Comes right off with mineral spirits and a rag. Oil based paint is much easier to clean off than water based paint IMNSHO.
Ok, then paint because painted wood is much harder to set on fire than unpainted.
Or paint because everything looks brighter, and you can spend less on lighting.
Paint isn't all about pretty.

Same for me also. I just finished my walls and started looking up prices for primer and paint, not worth it. I have so much lighting as it is i dont think it is necessary to prime and paint.
Another Kilz-oil based primer fan here. I followed mine up with a coat of their Pro-X 170 interior latex.
I've had dark gray walls and bare wood walls, putting a light/bright colored paint on them does make a difference.

I used cheap no name white semi gloss latex and sprayed it on. Really brighten it up. My plan was to insulate and finish the inside in metal in a year or two so I used the two cheap 5 gallon buckets worth. Hmmm, been 4 years and the paint never peeled and it's still nice and bright. Planning on insulating and finishing this year. Lol Ken

I'm missing something here. 5 gallons of primer ($75 of kilz or zinser) will cover 400-600sf. Paint is the same coverage. I use Glidden white semigloss from Lowes. $48 for 5 gallons. That's pretty cheap and you'll have a lot more light.

Sure 5 gallons will cover 400sqft of drywall.....osb not going to happen unless your doing an extremely thin coat.

This is THE reason I covered my ceiling with white metal liner. Screw it, and you are done.

My mileage was more like 200 sqft per gallon. I bought a 5 gallon and 3 single gallon and used it all on 1700 sq ft. goes on heavy and OSB is thristy

Ive painted osb before, whatever the coverage on the can states figure you will get half that when covering osb, even that is being optimistic.
What are you trying to accomplish Bob ? Cleaning brushes or off your hands ? When it comes to brushes for trimming oil-based Kilz primer, I use a 2" chip brush and throw it away when I'm done. If I have it on my hands, I use some lacquer thinner and a paper towel.
Just general clean up of painting tools done outside of the shop. Doesn't matter though because I decided to go with water based latex primer.

I used oil based Barn Paint on mine from Farm and Fleet. Covered well.
If you used Kilz oil-based primer, it will yellow over time. It will look similar to a place that smoked in.
I made that mistake at one time and have since top coated everything. It yellowed over time, slowly and I never noticed it till I tried some touching up of the walls. That's when I saw it.

I went to "Ollie's bargain outlet" and bought 5 gallon buckets of "antique white" latex. I did all walls and ceiling with a wagner power painter and a roller.The roller was actually as fast as the sprayer.I used no primer,just put it directly on the OSB. my garage is 28x36 and I don't recall how many buckets I used. I work in my garage,welding,cutting,grinding,painting,etc.etc.so I know the walls aren't going to stay white any way,so I really couldn't see wasting money on fancy paint.I did it 5 years ago and it still looks pretty good.
