I responded to an ad for used tools. The ad had no pictures because the guy said that he didn't own a digital camera. He said that he was a heavy duty mechanic and was retired. He said that all of his tools were Snap On or MAC and that he spent thousands every year adding to his tools. Sounded good right? I drove over an hour to see them. as you look at the pictures, think about what they should be worth. I posted his asking price at the end.DSC03614.jpg

But seriously did you keep a straight face? Or did you try to explain to him?
I'm curious to know what happened..

This seems to be typical of so many "depleted" used tool boxes that I see for sale; so much is missing... is there really that much in there? Again... I think many of these guys have their emotions and memories of a life long career wrapped up in these "for sale" deals; they feel they should be "rewarded" for all the money they spent on the truck after all those years... in reality I don't see a whole lot of tools there! :(
Makes you wonder if they sold or hocked much of their primarily used tools and this is what is left over...

I think sometimes people price them like that so they won't really have to sell them but they can tell themselves they tried.

The thing with this guy is that he sold his house and can't take the tools with him. He told me that he "NEEDS" to sell these. At $15,000, I think that he will be moving them after all.

Oh wait, sorry. He also said that he would throw in this top box for FREE. not the bottom box and not the tools inside and he also wanted to keep the half inch impact in the other picture.

It is a little disappointing to know that what you spend is so much more than what you're stuff's worth. I'm tempted to put my stuff on eBay, just to see what it "would" get, but i feel it would be a bit of a let down.

I guess whats amazing to me is that he was able to make a living with his toolbox so disorganized.

When the name of the game is efficiency, you dont make money searching for tools.

I normally try to get the asking price before I go out and look if its a long drive. That way you know if the guy is dreaming or not. But also realize, many of us are trying to get a you **** deal when we buy and are a little guilty of being cheap just like this guy is guilty of being unrealistic.

And besides, the hunt is fun, at least for me.

I did get the asking price. I have no problem spending $15,000 if it is a good deal. The problem was that there were no pictures and the guy embelished on what tools he did have.

I agree about trying to find a "you ****" deal. I think that all of us would like at least one of those.

I am not discouraged by this guys tools, I am allready working on another deal.

Actually, if I was buying those tools, I'd have no problem paying $1,200 to $1,300. At that price they could be sold on eBay for a pretty nice profit. That's not counting the box they were in. But assuming the box was included, I would certainly pay more, (but I always prefer to buy tool collections without the box if I can).

Even if the guy's asking price is nuts, there's no harm in making a proper offer...assuming you actually want some of the stuff. I guess that's the difference in buying to resell, and buying to keep and use. Personally, I don't want mismatched wrench sets and the dirty, beat up tools. But anything Snap-on will sell on eBay. Believe me, there is someone out there just waiting for you to list one of those older wrenches...to match the one they lost from their older set. Every one of those 40+ S-o wrenches would sell for about 35-50% of list on average. Problem is, each one would need a seperate auction, as they are all mismatched.

All you need is an internet savy teen to list them all!
