What was this socket modified for?

I’ve come across a few types of sockets modified in this fashion. Mostly drag link sockets and flat head screwdriver sockets. Is there something common that these were modified for?

Depending on size, could be for vintage Chevrolet distributor, for adjusting the points.

Or split nuts, as used on the back of vintage hand saws.

Depending on size, could be for vintage Chevrolet distributor, for adjusting the points.

That makes sense as a lot of the sockets that came on the tray it was on were common gm sizes from those years and newer.

This is one possibility.
There are also metric nuts with a similar slotted design used for certain specialty applications, such as firearms, but also found elsewhere, such as the folding wheelchair ramps on public transport busses.
The main difference between the handsaw split nuts and the industrial type is the width of the slot.
Handsaw split nuts have a relatively thin slot, like they were cut with a thin jeweler’s screwdriver.
The industrial split nuts have a wider slot for higher torque applications.

How about the tang nut in the pommel of a stacked-leather grip knife? Wide and thin.

I've made drivers for those from #2 slotted screwdrivers.
