When I was in college I worked at a Toyota dealer detailing cars. I shared the "downstairs" with a hack of a mechanic that finally got pissed off and quit. His tool box consisted of a Snap On lower with 3 drawers and an open space under that (It was supposed to have a roll-top style door) and a Mac upper. It turned out that his tool box was actually owned by one of the other mechanics upstairs, who had replaced it with a brandy-new Craftsman upper and lower. I asked him if he was interested in selling it and he offered it to me for $50. I almost left smoke trails pulling the cash out of my wallet so fast.
It turned out that a few weeks later my father was painting a Grand Am with the "GM Bright Red" factory color, so I removed all of the aluminum handles from the boxes, scuffed them and had my father paint them at the same time, and polished the aluminum while it was off the boxes. This worked out extremely well, for a couple reasons. Not only did I have brand new looking boxes, but my IROC that I bought very shortly after got a full repaint a few years later with the same color, so I wound up with a tool box that matched my car.
A couple years after I bought it I ran into the mechanic and he wanted to buy the box back. His Craftsman stuff had fallen apart.
That was, oh, 15 years ago now. I just finally outgrew it and replaced the Snap On lower box with the 41" Harbor Freight box and put the Mac on top of it. I moved the Snap On lower over near my compressor and filled it with my air tools.
