New is good. Mfg s have weeded out some of the lame old models. That price seems good. I just spent 2 or 3 hours with my pos 255 Wirematic. Never have really liked the fussy ******. I think the 256 is good.

It all depends on the type of material and the material thickness. Miller is real good at telling you in their catalog what each machine is capable of for thickness. They also tell you the amperage requirements which is really important too.

Yeah, without hefty rebates you won't touch a M252 for under $2k (although such rebates may come about once a year)

The 256 is sweet, great arc quality, I actually really like gun. Pet peeves: the fan is not thermostatic but on a timer. Do a 1 second tack? The fan will run for 6 minutes, period. They chose to save .50 on the power cord so while long it's stiff as ****. And the little hanger on the side that's supposed to be for the lead and gun is worthless (the latter being serious nit-picking).

I paid about $1860 a couple years ago for mine. Would do it again. But if I could get a 252 within $100 --maybe $200 -- I'd do that.
