A lot of Shock Shafts, Studs and whatnot are going to an External Torx style. So they are to hold the Stud from spinning to remove the Nut or to hold the Shaft from spinning when removing the Nut to replace the Coil Spring. Also to install Studs so you don't have to double nut them or use a Stud Installation/Removal Tool. Just a few examples.
