As the thread title states, what would be a fair deal for these toolboxes where you live based on what you see on CL and eBay or toolbox sales you're familiar with? If you don't show where you live in your user ID, please say where you are or at least your state.

First one...bottom box is about 8 on a scale of 1-10 condition-wise. Top box is a 9. These boxes are from 1988. All drawers are ball bearing except for the top three rows of little drawers on the top box. These boxes are 21.5" deep, and about 37" wide.

This is a Snap On taco box. Made in 1985. All friction slides except for the largest drawer on the bottom. About a 9 on a 1-10 scale.

I don't know what they're worth, but that taco box is awesome.

How much space inside those double doors?

Why do they call it a taco box? Reminiscent of the food cart variety?

Do you want me to answer this? I have had both of those boxes in the ATL area in the last year or so.

Purchased a taco wagon in slightly worse shape about 2 years ago in Atlanta for $425 if I remember right. Had a bunch of tools in it as well. Was on CL for about a week before I called. Had it on CL about a year ago for a few weeks @ $675 with no sale. Did and abay and got $625 or so to a collector type. Was suprised I got that much. I think the one pictured is in better shape. Guess $700 give or take on the taco special.

I use the same Snappy top and bottom you pictured. Came with a set of side drawers and several thousand dollars worth of snap-on stuff. What I paid for it was so little I will not even bother going into that, but a few time I have tried to sell this top bottom and 7 drawer matching sidebox in ATL for between $1000-1,200 without so much as a bite. I have seen a few listed in the $500-700 range that I did not see listed again, so am fairly confident that a top and bottom in the shape you listed would sell around here for $6-700 on average.

Just posted the other day about a similar top and bottom I struggled to get more than $600 for in CT a few years back.

In Wyoming where we have very little unemployment and the economy is booming with coal and methane....top boxes would bring 7-800 and the taco wagon would fetch 1500-2000 The prices don't change much south of me in Colorado....everything there is high.

I'm in the Los Angeles area and within a 100 mile radius, there are dozens of larger type boxes to choose from. Lots of Snap On, plenty of Mac, etc.....Not uncommon to see boxes in the $3k all the way up to $10K. Doule bays, triple bays, side lockers, custom tops......
That being said, I would expect to see the top set listed in the $1500 range and the taco wagon listed around $1000. What kind of prices the sellers are getting, if they sell at all, I do not know.

CL asking prices don't mean much, other than to make a wild guess from number of weeks/months the listing stays up. My guess is that most things that stay up more than 3 months sell for half or less of the asking price, or don't sell at all.

I had someone in my local CL shoot me an email on a box like this because I had posted a WTB listing. He was asking $1200, but he seemed a little unsure about the price himself. After I had informed him that I had already bought another box, he asked me if the price he was asking was fair.

So in South Bend, Indiana, that box was on CL for $1,200

There was a twin of the first set on Indianapolis CL a week ago for $400 with side boxes. The taco cart would probably bring about the same. If youre willing to wait a few weeks or months around here you might get $600. If you go to an industrial plant or large private shop auction, each of those would bring at most $200.

There is a Taco in Greensboro right now for $400. It is beat to **** and looks to have been rattle canned. The guy had it at $500 for several weeks. I offered him $100 by email and he told me to GFM. I guess I deserved that, but its not worth what he is asking. Worth is relative to what someone might pay, but worth to me is commensuratee with value. The value is based in part on what is available and right now the market (here) is flooded with decent double bay boxes under $1k. I would give him $250 but I doubt he would take it so I'll wait and then offer it up. Says he's firm this week at $400. He has it listed as a KR56. I looked that up and its a really old top box, nothing like the picture of the taco.

The roller combos like in the OP I have seen for outrageous prices and a few decent ones. I know this is relative to SO, but there is a Mac MB8100 and 8200 for sale locally for $250 and the guy even offered to trade it for some electrical work. I think its a steal and might go look at it tomorrow.

FYI, I made an offer on the Taco Box that wasn't accepted. I originally offered $550...then a week later $650...which was my limit. I think the guy sold it for $700-750.

Shortly thereafter, I bought the first setup for $750 delivered. I was happy with that deal. I would've liked the taco box, but think in the long run I'm better off with the top/bottom combo. It's a very nice setup and an excellent value compared to what I could get new for that kind of money.

In south Texas those are worth a small fortune. I've seen the top and bottom sets for 2K + the Taco cart for 1500 and up. Don't see many taco carts for sale in my area. SO stuff brings a fortune around here.

Agree, you got a fair market buy.

Now, let's make a list of high-dollar stuff which devalues 50% the minute it is put into service:
1. Truck brand tools and tool boxes
2. Boats/motor homes/travel trailers
3. Retail jewelry
4. Some girlfriends who become wives - see #3 for engagement rings

What else should be on the list?

The first set comes up around here occasionally with an asking price of $900-$1200, which I think's a little high, but I have no information about what they eventually sell for. The taco cart I have a little more personal knowledge about, as a buddy of mine bought one in similar condition a couple years ago for $600. I see asking prices on them locally from $600-$1000.

Can I add that the taco cart is much better made than the top and bottom chest setup. That cart is a beast!

I would have guessed between 600 and 700 for either set. I see them listed higher on craigslist all the time, and they sit there. Lower and they are gone by the time you call about them.

I got a bottom box like the first set up along with a side box, and a beat up old SO 33" wide box for $650 but it came with at least 40 pairs of SO pliers/cutters, Channel locks, vise grips, SO punch set, and a few other things.

I've been keeping my eye open for a decent taco wagon for my brother in law, but can never find a good deal on one in SE michigan.

Not exactly like yours and I'm not implying he will get this price but here's a ~similar box set up currently posted for sale in Seattle. I wouldn't mind owning this kit at all.

balane:
That looks pretty much like my 65th Anniversary SO box. I've had mine for 30 years.. bought it in like new condition - with tons of brand new SO tools. I paid less than 20% of SO list... So I've been very happy with the whole deal.

That said - other than the pride of ownership that comes with a nice SO box {especially for home use} - I'd rather spend the money today for a more modern SO Roll Cab - with wider drawers, on roller slides. Yes, - one might have spend twice that amount... but I'd to that.

For $900.00 - or $800.00 I'd rather have the US General 13 drawer lower + the upper that goes with it or add a side box or two.

That old SO model has friction slide drawers and it takes some serious effort to push them closed when fully loaded - plus you have to push equally on both sides of the drawer to keep them from jamming. The drawers have dividers welded inside the them {for strength I'd guess} - and this limits the options you have to tool placement. The US General drawers are strengthened with reinforcements welded on the underside of the drawer {like the newer SO boxes}.

Looking at the condition of the box you pictured on CL - I'd be surprised if the seller got more than $500.00 for both..

FWIW,
Carl B.

800 for the first set.

I dont know about the taco just because of its obscurity and I have not seen one like it for sale here ever.

I saw a KRA4008 sell for 250 and a Matco large service cart sell for 75 in the last month.

Here is a screaming deal going on right now.

http://savannah.craigslist.org/tls/2482694794.html

Apparently times are tough and the market is saturated.

Southeast GA is my locale.

Snap On boxes used to hold their value way better than they do now.
The new reality is that ca$h is King.
Like it or not, those US General 13 drawer boxes and 5 drawer Sevice Carts have flooded the market.
1st box, guess $600-$750.
Taco Box- Very cool, learned something new today, guess $750-$1000.
There are some good deals on clean late model Snap On boxes if you are patient; 30% of new might even be a stretch.
Craigs is littered with those giant pneumatic tire Snap On Tool Wagons, relist after relist at $9500.

Possibly stronger, but I think the top and bottom setup will be of more use. Like others have said in the past, if you have it up against the wall the options are more limited.

I'm not going to say anything bad about the US General rollcab b/c I do think it's an excellent value for the price, but I know personally I would never be completely happy with it. I'd much rather have an older Snap On setup. But that's just me.

That was a big negative with the taco wagon for sure. Agree with everything said.

Exactly, but you must realize that most people dont get out, nor do they shop around or negotiate. You also have to realize that you are on a board where most "steal" vises for triple their actual collector value, and "collect" new tools.

I have identical set of KR-650/KR-655 (1987) that I bought for $800 delivered about a year ago. This is a tall box ... I love it! If you were closer, I'd buy yours too! Bill

I have a KR-650 that I bought a couple of years ago. The paint isn't as nice as that one but otherwise it's in pretty good shape. It's all frictions slides. I think I paid $200 or $250 for it. I do like it and would kinda like to find a bottom box for it.

lol, I have no idea (way out of my price range), but in this area, some of the ultra cheap boxes like Jobmates list for more than they sold on sale (when new), doubtful anyone buys them at that price though. I would venture to guess 1/3 the price of what a simlar box would cost new would be fair to the buyer and seller, although the taco wagon is no longer in production and has collectiblity, which might raise the value slightly.

LOL a hundred bucks ..you are a more flies with vinegar guy

I dont know about that, but I'm not going to overpay for a POS. These cats that buy stuff cheap and rattle can it up without even cleaning it and then want high dollar because of the name are crazy. Like rich kids in school thinking their **** dont stink because mom and dad get them the latest and greatest, but now grown up. The guy in Greensboro is a junkman and I know that about him, so vinegar with that guy.. maybe.

OT: I see the same **** here. People buying $1 sockets at the pawn shop, wanting $10+s/h+pp fees for them because they say SO, but they are $12 new. Unless you're looking for that overpriced patina and willing to pay for it (many are, perhaps unknowingly)then there are better economical options. I am NOT. This topic refers to market prices and just because its asked for does not make it valued as such. The TACO I posted about is a 1 on a 10 scale. A higher rating would garner a higher price. I'd go $250 in my area on that box, as I stated earlier. Not $600. That's $350 for the name and to egg this guy on to keep selling overpriced junk. It's junk because it's beat to **** and overpriced. Someone will buy it but I'm a reasonable person with my money. I dont get emotional about toolboxes.

I dont critique classifieds here b/c it is against the rules and slows the site down, but when I see it I'll PM someone in a heartbeat for doing that and everyone should- keep us all honest. At least here, we're supposed to be a community. Not everybody is aware of that. I get a lot of good deals and try to pass that back. I help people out, but I dont care to get screwed and dont like to see others' getting screwed either. I cant post about it, but I can sure let them know. Peace out.
