What Would You Bring?

Getting ready for the Hot Rod Power Tour.

I will be driving my 1966 Ford Fairlane Station Wagon with a 289 4V (and possibly one or two of my other cars of the same vintage if more of my car-less friends decide to tag-a-long).

I was going to bring an old Craftsman portable box.

The question is, what should I fill it with?

I was thinking of:

Hammer
Couple of pairs of pliers
Assortment of screw drivers
1/4 and 3/8 drive ratchet handles
1/4 and 3/8 SAE sockets
SAE combination wrenches
Pry bar

What else would you take?

It sounds like you have most of the tools covered: I'd add duct tape and a suitable lug wrench to change a tire. I also carry a tire plug kit. It's saved my neck a couple of times.

In my experience you might want to also bring:
a set of points (assuming you haven't already converted to electronic ignition)
distributor cap & rotor (uless they are almost new)
a spare fuel filter
Drive belt(s) and hoses if you are unsure of their condition
By-pass hose because you can't really tell
Fluids

I don't know anything about your car so these comments might be inappropriate but before you leave:
The weak points of the 289 were the fiber gear on the timing chain and the oil pump drive shaft. I doubt you'll have a problem with the oil pump driveshaft, that's usually a cold weather phenomenon but if you're on the OEM timing chain (or a fiber one that's been there a long time)...I would change it before the trip.

The Power Tour always has great tech support so it you get into real trouble I'm sure they will help you out.

Have fun! I've always want to run (or at least see) the Power Tour and I'm sure it will be the adventure of a lifetime.

Maybe you can share it with the rest of us!

I have been on one of those power tours and what you forget someone else usually has. They are great fun with like minded individuals. Always meet interesting people on those power tours.

Good advice Lou.

We converted the ignition when we did a 4V swap. I also did some trading with my transmission shop buddies and the car is now AOD too.

I am not sure where Sugar Hill is but you should consider coming with us. With as many cars as we have going, wewill have a spare seat for sure. And yes, I am serious!

Wow, that would be cool!

I've read the articles in Hot Rod, and it sounds like you'd want to pack every spare part you can think of.

Good luck!

bring a 12 volt air pump along with that tire repair kit. Some spare wire fuses and connectors. Maybe a lightweight jack and jack stand. Power tours are great and you will be among friends that you never met.

I envy your trip. I usually have a blanket that I can lay on, and for PT I would suggest a lawn chair so If I was really broke down I could sit comfortably by the side of the road and watch the tour go by while the strecher was on the way. Plan for sucess.

Power Tour is on my bucket list.
You should have a good time.
And a 66 Fairlane wagon you will have one of the coolest cars out there.
Got some pics?

Maybe add jug of water and coolant to your list.

The Tour has been on my bucket list for a while. I just hope I am not moving towards the bucket!!! :wtf:

Here is the Wagon:

How about one extra set of lug nuts? Unless your wheels use just regular off the shelf ones. Anything that you've had to replace more than once or is not available off the shelf at just about any auto-parts store (starter, alternator, etc.) How about a few 12"x12" squares of 3/4" plywood (in case you have to jack up the car on some soft soil?

I would add a power valve, needle and seat and accelerator pump to the parts list. To the tool list a file, an awl or scriber and magnetic pick up tool.

Enjoy the run,

Steve

I used to do a lot of long distance motorcycle touring. Folks on the motorcycle fourms would always ask me what tools I carried. I had made a custom tool kit with everything my experience told me I would need. One guy asked me why I carry all the tools and I told him "I like to carry a complete set of tools in case I run into someone that knows how to use them" I think he thought I was serious.

Well, I have done cruises and the elevation and temperature change did require a jet change, so. I have the Edelbrock jet kit for my carb in my road box. Plus you never know when you might go racing.

Maybe one of those small floor jacks. I have one in the box on my car trailer, I call it my track jack.

When you say 289 4V do you mean (old school) 4 barrel or (new school) 4 valves per cylinder ?

Bring a camera and plenty of batteries and memory cards. The cars you will see are awesome. Did the 2009 tour as a Long Hauler from Madison to Bristol.
Actually got to do some hot laps at Bristol. That was amazing. Make sure grab all the free stuff the vendors give out. Got to meet Vic Edelbrock and get his autograph!! HAVE FUN........

Sounds to me with all of these parts you're taking you're going on the Paris to Dakar rally or maybe crossing Australias' outback. I thought America was the 'Home of the Automobile' Surely there are garages along the way ?
