Like the title says, what do you consider a complete set (shallow and deep) for each drive size (1/4, 3/8, 1/2). I'm trying to fill in the missing sizes from my Cman set.

For now, wobble type sockets and mid-length sockets aren't part of the equation and more than likely never will be.

if you're working on vehicles, ruling out swivel sockets is a huge mistake IMO. i can't tell you how frequently i reach for them as they make some jobs SOOOO much easier.

as far as what is a 'complete' set - what are you working on? for some folks, 4mm sockets might be their most common tool; others might need 1.5" 10x a day.

that set is missing universals, adapters, extensions, and flat tip/phillips/hex/torx socket drivers.

You will never own a complete set. I've been wrenching as a pro since the 60's. I own several thousand sockets. I'm not there yet

Universals come in both 6&12 pt., standard and deep well, chrome and impact. Don't forget all the impacts if you use air tools. Might need a few 8 pt. sockets, special plug sockets and with torx and allen wrench sockets. If you had all the sockets that you needed on a tool cart probably the wheel would fall off.....TIM

I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination, but I do enjoy getting dirty. Especially if it is something that I can do on my own to save some cash on a *relatively* minor repair.

At the moment, we have a 2002 Ford Focus and a 2007 VW Jetta. Who knows what will be in the garage later. To date, I've mainly only done the very basic maintenance items, bolt-on goodies, stereo, etc. Plus various tasks around the house that might call for it.

Don't get me wrong, I do have wobble extensions and universal joint adapters in the cart, but I have yet to run into a situation where a wobble/universal socket was needed. Would they have made some of the jobs I've done easier, of course, but they weren't required to finish the job. Hell before I got the idea to fill in the missing holes in my set, I've only had to go out and buy one or two sockets that I didn't already have.

I'm *probably* good on ratchets, extensions, drive adapters, philips bits, slotted bits, torx bits, and hex bits already.

No air tools, but I do have a cordless impact and a small set of 3/8 and 1/2 impact sockets from HF. Maybe enough for my impact needs at the moment, who knows, time will tell.

Don't rule out the "semi" deeps. I use them more than the short and deep put together. Give em a try.

what i consider a complete set is every socket i have used and every socket i might use. most the time this mean getting the common sets and then adding single sockets to it. :)

I've got shallows in 6 and 12 point for all three drives. For deeps, I have one full set of 1/2-inch impact, two sets of 3/8 drive, and a set and a half of 1/4 drive.
I personally don't bother with 12-point deepwells, because I've never seen the point. And the only reason I have 12-point shallows is because my first Craftsman set came with both.

I make it a point to have two of every size socket, and four of every size wrench (at least) because I work on cars with friends a lot, and two of everything makes the work go a lot easier.

The only way to complete the set is to own a tool truck. And even then, they aren't really "yours"
