So we have a 2 car attached and an oversized 3 car detached. I need more space...

Option 1: Move, cause you 'll screw up the good looking layout you have...
Option 2: Add the 14' x 40' (double deep) garage to the right side of detached.
Option 3: Add a 20' x 40' (and still double-deep) garage to the right side of det.
Option 4: Tear it down and start over again...

pics of the existing layout are attached. Thanks for your feedback.

Whats on the left side of the detached?
Doesn't look, to me, like you could add between the two structures and make it look good.
Could you just add a double wide single deep onto the left side of the attached and be satisfied? Or are you set on a 40' deep?

There's room. I think 14' wide would look good. Contractor said to go 20' wide, which would put the new front corner behind the rear corner of the house. I think it would look too tight.

Can't add to the left of the detached garage. There's maybe 14', so would not be enough w/ setbacks in the county.

Not set on 40' deep, but figured I want to be able to park 2 cars inside. Or if I get another truck. My last truck was about 20' long.

Did you consider going 20' like option 3 but only adding a single wide door and use the area floor space as work shop ?

Yes, actually I have. But the garage door in that case, would be either 12' wide or 14' wide.

I am leaning towards 14' wide x 40' deep w/ a 10' wide door. I think that might "look" best :dunno: maybe.

Build as big as you have space and money for.
No matter how big it is, you will end up wishing for bigger:bounce::bounce:

Funny story... I'm planning a garage to the side of my house. Property line offset limits me to about 40' in width. The other day my wife told me I could build it as deep as I want, all the way to the back of the property if I wanted to.

The only thing stopping me now is I can't afford to build a 400' deep garage!

Are you just looking for more parking? Seems like you could extend the front of the three car into the driveway and it wouldn't change to look or feel that much.

How this for some food for thought.

Make this new section 14' or 20' wide, but make it taller to allow for a possible future lift. Since it would have taller walls, turn the roof line and run it perpendicular to the current roof line.

If you go 20' and 40' deep like your plans, you could gain extra storage in the rear with a mezzainine deck.

Getting rid of stuff is free.

And I will gladly haul away a Charger!

Is there room behind the detached garage toward the fence? Or is there a setback close there? The way Option 3 is described I think you must have about 16-20' behind you could build?

I'm just suggesting this since going deeper with the detached with have minimal aesthetic impacts from the driveway and backyard.

What is the goal, other than just 'space'? I.E. storage for 2 more cars? Boat, RV, tractor space? Woodworking?

I thought about "knocking back" the rear wall of the existing garage - it's 26' deep now, and wish it were 40' or close.

Trouble with going "forward" with the garage, is the turning radius needed for the bay closest to the house. It's perfect, right now.

Contractor said to add on like that would be like starting over again. Might as well, knock it down...

Yes, definitely have ceiling tall enough for lifts. Right now, I have lifts in the detached 3 car, so more than 3 cars in there now... And still not enough...
