I was called by my Matco dealer and he reported that my new 6 series 6225RX has arrived at the local Matco depot and that the carton had a rip in the front so they opened it up and there is a small dent on the front right above the right bank of drawers. He said it about it is about 3/8" wide, and that it'll be delivered tomorrow. This after being told it should of be delivered last Thursday but they lost it somehow but then located it, what a cluster. I'm so pissed I'm thinking about telling him cancel the order, how would you handle this?

Discount the box, get free tool allotment, replacement of the box, switch tool trucks, leave it a lone. I think that's all your options. Lol.

I would be looking for a completely different box or a serious discount. You pay a premium for truck tools. That premium should mean that you get everything you ordered, exactly as you ordered, every time.

If a HF or International or Masterforce or whatever box has a small dent you think, "oh well, it was so cheap, who cares" but when you're pitching the money for the truck tools, it better be perfect IMO.

I would cancel no matter what and get a fresh replacement. No way you want a dent in your brand new box

That is what I was thinking, I still have a Matco 5 drawer side cabinet from 1983 that the dealer opened the carton on his truck in front of me and the damn thing was racked. The dealer was a ***** and I ended up with it after arguing for a 30% discount but now every time I go to open up one of the drawers it just pisses me off. So unless they offer something fantastic Its going back. I can have a KRL1032 or 1033 within 2 weeks.

That's what I would do. I would want to inspect the damage before accepting and signing off on the delivery. If it's something I could live with I'd ask for a discount. If it's not, back it goes.

I think no less then a 30% discount PLUS at least 10-15% tool credit of the retail price or let him keep the box and go to a different truck for your tools. Even to by a new box undamaged box my snappy guy was gonna give me 10% in tool credit.

The dealer should be able to call corporate and have them go after the freight company for a discount. You can definitely get a discount. Don't accept a new damaged box without getitimg money back or free tools.

Exactly, if I were Matco corporate, I wouldn't be letting the freight company mess up a 5-figure box without compensating me. If you take the box, whatever the freight company compensated them would be money in their pocket. No reason they shouldn't compensate YOU. It's your money, it's your box, it's your inconvenience if you accept the damage. If you send it back and tell them to get you another one, you better believe they'd be taking that out on the carrier, too.

Tell your dealer you won't accept it without a discount. They will file a claim with the carrier and you will be compensated. Do it.

Wow, all the names have changed and the story gets told all the same......

If you cancel some guy out there will be happy as dog snot he got a big matco box at a discount for a tiny dent. It will balance out for someone.

Don't forever hate the box if you can't live with the damage. Let it go and try again.
It is just tool storage and should not be something that causes you a lifetime of hurt feelings.

Is it worth losing you relation with the Matco dealer over, you both have spent a long time building that. Don't sell it out cheap.

Depends on how you are going to use the box. Shop environment or home? If it's a Shop I say get a nice discount and put the money towards more tools. Pet peeve I have is I see so many young Techs get a $5000-$10000+ plus box from Snap On when they have almost no tools and most of what they got is cheap s**t from HF, Northern, or maybe some Craftsman. Take the discount and buy more tools. My first Macsimizer was a "scratch and dent". Got it for $3800 versus a $5000 list (at the time). Honestly never noticed the scratches at all. I do work as a Body Tech/Painter so my box gets dustier than someone who works as a Service Tech or Mechanic, but if you are in a Shop, your main concern should be making money and doing quality work, not how pretty your box looks. If you are outifitting a home shop I can see where you might want to get another box (something other than a Matco box,Snap On KRL, or a Macsimizer if you can get it discounted deep enough but that's just my opinion:))

I ran into this cluster **** with Mac with a warranty replacement box. Got delivered when I was on lunch break, box torn with random wholes and crushed on one corner. Opened box and found pain chipped on crushed corner dent below the paint chip, scratch on side, and two. Dents on rear panel. I call Mac immediately, my Mac guy and his regional manager, also called the freight company. Took pictures and didn't move the box. I made sure everyone knew I was pissed, I also started to submit a claim with the freight company.mac guy and manager came to look at it, said I couldn't get another one since it was a warranty replacement.pissed me off, so they gave me a free box cover.ok box still fudged up.so manager told me if a wood top would make happy, told him no! Then called him back and told him a stainless top would, he said ok but I hold have to cancel the claim.so I did, got the top a week later opened it in front of delivery driver, and found bottom corner crushed with hole through bottom of box.wtf!! Called Mac and they said don't accept it we'll send you another one. On week later finally perfect. Needless to say I'm never dealing with Conway freight again.also before the box was replaced I had gotten a discount on the box to get me to keep it, so I got a 4,800ish box for 3,500.

As for op. don't accept it. Call him and tell not to ship it, what is wrong with him he gets a call that it's damaged and he tells you he's still sending it your way? I got to question his ethics, if I had a customer and found out his box was damaged I would request a new one. Who knows maybe he already spent the money or doesn't want to lose out on any money on the box.either way he's a bad dealer in my eyes.

Tell the idiot that he should have inspected it before accepting it from the freight company and you expect one with no damage.

The audacity of him saying it has damage and he's going to delivery it anyway would make my blood boil!!

If he offers a discount tell him you might consider it at dealer cost.

BIG BIG BIG discount or repair/ replace.

You payed for a factory new box with absolutely no blemishes. You payed for a box that is basically a showroom car in terms of tool storage. You didnt cheep out.

Hell I would even be upset about a cheep hardware store box being dinged if it was new.

If he is not willing to offer you at least 15-25% discount then tell him deals off. Youll be hurting him alot more than he is hurting you. Have you already made the down payment? If not tell him no. Its probably not his fault that its late so dont be mad at him. But what you can be mad at him about is the fact he is trying to sell off that damaged box to you.

Think how mad he will be when you say no. then a few weeks later you roll in a nice new KRL series box and he sees you with it and how pleased you are and how blemish free it is.

Good Luck

Take a look at the damage first, it might "smart" repair (Dont tell the dealer this though). If it will repair to your satisfaction go for the craziest discount in the world, start at 75% off and let him chip you to 60%. Tell him he can claim the discount/damages from the shipping company and also tell him it leaves you more money to spend on his Matco truck filling your new box.

Everyone wins.

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Isn't it up to the business to build the relationship with his customer and not blow it over something the business should handle?

If you paid "new box price", don't take one that should be sold at a "scratch & dent price." If the Matco guy doesn't get it, then he isn't worth keeping the relationship with.

We sell brand new LISTA cabinets at 50% off when they have a little ding. LISTA's no hassle shipping policy guarantee's a new cabinet with expedited turn around if it is damaged in transit. LISTA handles all of the logistics at no cost or hassle to the customer. I would be asking for either a big discount or a new cabinet. IMHO

Freight companies are tough to deal with. They do not like to pay freight claims at and will run you around the block until you are too tired to put up a fight. What most consumers don't comprehend is what FOB really means. If it is FOB the supplier, which 99% of freight is, it means that the ownership and responsibility becomes the buyer, not the sellers, when it leaves the loading dock. If it gets damaged along the way, it is the responsibility of the buyer to chase the carrier. The carrier has well defined limits of liability and sometimes those are in terms of cents/per pound. Not sounding too good is it. here are some things one can do t to protect themselves from freight damage and the claims run around.

* Use a supplier that will ship FOB destination or one that has a guaranteed shipping damage program (not too many do)
* Use someone like www.cargocover.com to put insurance on the shipment. It costs about $25 but has a $500 deductible.
* And the most important .... Open up your shipment and inspect it BEFORE you sign the acceptance. If it is damaged you have a few choices: 1) You can accept it as is, noting the damage on the BOL and getting the drivers confirmation signature, 2) Send it back immediately, or 3) Call your supplier while the driver is still there. They may be able to help.

We ship lots of freight and yes, we get damage from time to time. In all instances we tell the customers to call us immediately so we can help resolve the situation.

Hope this helps.

Joe

Actually those places would just give you a different one and you'd see the damaged one in the scratch and dent sale in the front isle.

Exactly! Makes me wonder who you're dealing with here. They should have offered something right at 1st contact. So they're just going to try to slide this one by you, what an attitude. Unless I really liked the box and their other products I'd be thinking about finding another place to deal.

I thought the point in spending all the extra money was for the build quality of the tools not how pretty they are. It doesn't sound to me like that dent is going to affect how the box functions.

Supposedly there's four types of customers in the world. The first knows everything and just wants the best price. The second has a bunch of questions and wants specific answers that match what he has in mind. The third kind wants to have a certain kind of experience. I forget what the fourth one is.

I think a lot of people are some mixture of these. It's good to know which you are. I think it's telling that your box from 30 years ago still bothers you.

For me it would depend on what I thought of the dealer and how he was treating the situation, I guess that's what kind of customer I am.

I would buy a discounted dented box all day long, if I were in your shop when they came to drop it I'd try to buy it if you complained about it. It's a tool box, not a ferrari. Then again I dented/scratched an 2013 duramax within 18 hours of getting it from the dealership so what do i know.

I would look at it this way-

If you bought a new car, would you be okay if the driver's door had a dent in it before you even took delivery?

Deep discount, replacement, or walk away. Don't accept damaged goods at full price.
