Disassemble, then soak in rust remover. After it is cleaned of all rust, using firearm blueing, or a black oxide finish, reassemble, and call it a great find. Not all Snap On tools were chrome plated.

I'll have to see what the FIL left in the garage. I think there's some gun bluing and possibly rust remover

I got it apart. What an amazingly simple design. Gear looks good just dirty. I'll have to grab some rust remover. Evaporust? Where would I find it, hardware store?

I've always used a fine wire wheel on a bench grinder, at least after a good soaking in carb cleaner.

You can get evaporust at Tractor Supply cheapest usually...

Lowes carries some WD-40 soak and something that is similar...

You could also soak it in some vinegar or a molasses mix...

Or hit it with a wire wheel...

I got some of the Loctite naval jelly rust dissolver. Hopefully that will work and is safe

Just a little better after applying rust dissolver and soaking everything in engine degreaser. I'll have to get some bluing and finish it up.

A good start towards your goal. Try hitting it with a wire wheel as someone mentioned above, then some jeweler's rouge and a polishing wheel to really put a finish on it before bluing.

Ditto.

I did that to a bunch of the old snap-on metric sockets 1/2" drive, with the silver finish (50's vintage I think).

wire wheeled them down, shot of brakeleen, then gun blue (I prefer the burchwood-casey paste type).

they have a great black finish now. worked so well I re-did some older rusty impact sockets and they look like new.

Exactly what I was going to say...

I would scrub it with WD40, Super Lube the internals and put it in my collection of old ratchets. The patina looks good the way it is for collectability.

I decided to give this to my nephew. He'll appreciate it more than me. I visited my son in Virginia and his fishing bug came back. I donated my 5 piece Craftsman pro mini pliers to him and my felo 5 piece screwdriver set to his Airman buddy
