I bought some tools off a guy on Craigslist last week, and now he sent me an email saying he has some more tools he is looking to sell and wanted to give me the first crack on them before he posts it on Craigslist tomorrow.

I don't know anything more that what the pictures show, so what would you offer him?

I wouldn't offer anything from the pictures, and I wouldn't drive far to look it over.

OTOH if its not too far, take a look, but a lot of it seems to be OK, but no real resale value, and very common how do you get rid of it stuff if you buy a few toolboxes and sell the good items.

He just told me he was looking for $50, so instead of insulting him with my offer I decided to pass and wish him luck on the sale. Who knows maybe he will email me next week with something awesome. I don't even need the tools pictured, I just can't turn down an opportunity to buy more tools sometimes.

Some people get insulted and some people appreciate you making the offer. The best way to handle that is just say that most of the stuff you alrady have and pick out the things you do like. I like the Craftsman hammer and the Mac (relabled Channellock) pipewrench pliers. Some of the other stuff I'm not sure of because I can;t see the name. I'd tell him i'd give him 15 for those two items or the entire lot for 30. If he gets insulted then he isn't the person to do business with. I have people low ball me sometimes in a rediculas way and I just bust out laughing. make a joke and counter or decline his offer. It's part of doing business. I'm working on a deal right now and told the guy flat out that I would pay *** amount of dollars for something he has. I told him to give it a few days and if he couldn't sell I would buy at that price if he wanted to sell it. I saw he still had the add up this morning and Black Friday is tommorow. when he needs the cash. I hope he calls but he wasn't insulted but he thought he could get more than I offered. I told him up front it was worth more than what I offered but it's something I have a lot of already. I'm never afraid of making an offer to someone who knows what they have and what it's worth.

When you can't see the brands, you can't make a serious offer. I tend to ask kind of sideways questions like are all the sockets part of a set or different brands, or are all the socket USA, instead of asking about each brand name.

As is, looks a LOT more $20 than it does $50, and who needs more open end wrenches?
