Snapon gives the guys in the local community college tech program a 50% discount, so what seems to work well is to wait until somebody drops out and buy their box cheap. Being that guy selling his box cheap REALLY *****, so I'd say its a good idea to keep expenses low until you are sure about doing this and have a paying job at least lined up, then do that 50% deal.

Yeah, I've considered the discount. Even at 50% boxes are still so expensive. I often see boxes on craig's list go for a fraction of the original cost. If I can beat the 50% by a good margin I'll probably go for it.

As far as sticking with the program...
I have no doubt that this is what I want to do. I've worked construction for years and could have endless work if I wanted. Was a school counselor for a few years and realized I couldn't handle the politics and B.S. I have always loved working on cars and should have pursued it as a career in the first place.

I've been in the working world for quite some time and have a good chunk of cash saved up for quality tools and a box.

I appreciate the advice.

That's a KRL7002 and it's worth $2500 if it's in flawless shape. Somebody else on the board has their sights set on that box though.

I've got a beat up old Kennedy 6 drawer box in my garage with side cabinet that is already over flowing. If you saw my garage basement and van you would realize I have a pretty serious tool addiction. Lets just say I'm a firm believer of having the right tool for the job.

couldn't find the model number mentioned in the auction so I don't know how much this sold for new or what kind or sliders it has.

Call snap on and ask what model took the place of the one on ebay. That way you will get an idea of the replacement cost.

I don't think that toolbox is like the KRL tooboxes because the drawer depth on a KRL is 29". The ebay toobox is 22".

You can find a nice toolbox at a price you are willing to pay if you are patient. I recently bought a used Snap on toolbox. While looking I found that most toolboxes were priced to high by the seller. I was almost always the person willing to pay the most money but the seller felt my high dollar was to low. I'm pretty sure those boxes did not sell. In fact there are two toolboxes with in about 10 miles of me in flawless condition, but still for sale.

I would be suprised if that ebay toolbox was bid up any higher than $800 or $900.

I'm thinking the seller is wrong on the depth measurement. That box looks exactly like the KRL7002 in my 2001 catalog. The replacement box is KRL7022.

Certainly could be the case. A call to Snap on would most likely confirm the current model number or the toolbox very similar to the ebay toolbox.

Do people in vocational education programs keep their toolboxes at the schools? I'd assume so.

Assuming that everything would fit, I think a good first box would be something like this:

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...&group_ID=3140&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

Plus buying any power or air tools in kits with cases.

The nice thing about that small box, I would think, is that it could graduate to being a road box when you end up buying something giant and expensive for storage.
