Have the opportunity to rent one of 2 places, what would you rent.

$50 a mo, corner of shop to store jeep body in while building the frame. less than 1/4 mile from house heat and electricty

or

$53 a mo, about 25x60, 5 miles from home, no electricty, no heat no lights, all mine...in the middle of corn field

the draw back to the larger is that they want 6mo rent at a time, and the corner they only want to beable to relocate my stuff on a rair occasion if they need to use the full shop.

Corn field and buy a generator.

I have seen the "move on rare occasion" turn into "your project is outside" before.

This is a no-brainer, go for the larger space. I would LOVE to get a space that size. Brimg whatever power you need, the space is practically free.

Corn field, Buy a generator and a "torpedo" type kerosene, fuel oil heater. That is SUPER CHEAP for that size space. How long are you going to need it. If it is a long time and you could get a long lease you might consider adding some minimal electrical service.

Doesn't sound like you will be working on the body much, so distance is not a factor. I'd rent the cornfield one and let someone else also store there thereby making a small profit or breaking even.

The corn field is "fairly" secured. It is an old military ammunition bunker. The entire place is fenced, each renter (gets there own bunker) has a key to get into the corn field. There are armed guards doing random patrols of the property, but thefts still can and do happen.

It depends if your working in the space at all. If its just dry storage go big. If your going to work, heat and electricity are no brainers. Make your project not easily accessible to move. Tell them you live around the corner if they need something. Big doesnt equal better. Plus if you have to use the can, you can run home. Squatting in a field ain't much fun. Just my .02.

sounds like you just need a place to store the tub while you're working on the rest.
assuming you have enough room to work @ home

either would work for me.

when i'm "building" i have a tendency to start stockpiling parts, steel and nearly anything else i think i might need.

depending on where you are at, no heat may not be an issue, if you plan on working at the rented space, electric is nice to have, kinda PITA to moving a generator around.
last place i rented was 5 miles from home, no heat, no water, but it did have electric. didnt spend much time down there in the winter, and never got much done.

how long are you going to need it? But I would hate for some one to move my stuff out into the rain, I would pay the 3.00 diff. and know who was messing with my stuff (no one) and you don't go over to find your stuff has been sitting out on the curb for a week looking like a yard sale.... Rich

Spend the extra $3. I would also find out what you are allowed to do in the place before spending a fortune on genies and heaters and such. They may restrict it to storage only. Also, if it's an old ammo bunker, it should be a concrete structure covered with earth. Should be well insulated that way.

Cornfield. A building that locks up is the big part. Heat and power sources can be scrounged or found on Craiglist. A big enough genset will run a compressor. If a toilet is a concern, and there's none in the building, maybe an RV-grade chemical toilet.

I share a 20x30 ish with some friends, it's more per month then 6 months of yours at a time. Has good power and water. No heat and nearly no insulation.

Either one sounds like a steal. Lucky you!

Thinking I’ll go with the bunker...if I can get in. They are all full but they may have some they are going to evict the renters for lack of payment. That’s my planned in. As for the bathroom I’ll just go before I go. Yep it is concrete buried in earth, except for the roof, non-insulated wood truss with metal sheeting. I can do whatever I want as long as I do no damage. If the 7' door is to short I can enlarge that if I want too.
I’m planning on about 50% of my work and 95% of my storage out there.

Nope not near "slab city" This place used to make bombs during WWII. After it was decommissioned a company bought the place and uses part of it for government storage (hence armed security), and the other side of the property is rented out to individuals for personal use.

How about a house refinance and build your own garage ? Put the monthly fee towards the payment of your own garage.

I would love to; in fact I’m getting bids for it now. The issue is that the biggest I could possibly build is 12x22 drive through with a parking pad behind it. I’m guessing that even that would cost near 15-20K…with me doing much of the work. At 20K over 120mo (10 years) 0 interest, my payment would be 166.67 mo or at 53mo I’m out 6360. Not to mention its 30x60
