What year is this old Fridge?

I'm in the process of getting this fridge ready to paint and use in my garage. I plan on painting it to look like a PEPSI can. so I want to put the pepsi logo on it from the era the fridge was made. I'm guessing late fifties to early sixties.

It's a Gilson Snow-Bird, made in Ontario Canada.

I checked the name plate on the back and other than the serial # and spec's, no idea what year. The serial # does start with 57? but could be coincidence.

Anyone know about what year this fridge might me.

cheers and thanks

The style looks like early 50's. By the late 50's they started to look more modern. My parents had a 1947 Frigidaire that looked very similar. It lasted for almost 50 years. They say old friges are expensive to operate. Bob

Get the make, model, and serial number off the compressor, and I might be able to get you pretty close.

Somewhere on the compressor, there's a metal tag that contains that information.

From the picture, the compressor looks like it's a Tecumseh compressor.

the fridge is 2.2A@120VAC, that 264Watts. so...
E(kWh/day) = P(W) × t(h/day) / 1000(W/kW)

My weekend rate is 7.5 cents/kWH
My weekdays rates are based on certain times of the day.....

For ease of calculation and worse case scenario, lets say the fridge runs 24hrs a day.
My fridge costs .478 cents per day to run on the weekends, weekdays it costs 0.511 cents per day

that works out to $14 a month to run.

I will do that..... when I get home from work I will get it for you. I noticed the nameplate on the compressor is in bad shape....so let's see what I can get off of it.

thanks

If you do find it is expensive, just put it on a timer to run only the hours you want. It would prolly be an advantage as it would keep it from frosting up. I'm sure that's not a frost free 'fridge.

Those are the kinds of fridges we were reminded many, many times as kids in the 1960s not to play with. The outside-latching door and an airtight seal, we were taught, was a deathtrap during hide-and-seek.

I remember very well people being asked to take the doors off before disposing of them.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you regarding the nameplate information.

I had to dig way back into the archives to find what I needed.

From what you sent me, the compressor is a Tecumseh Model P91, manufactured from 1953 to 1958.

According to the nameplate, I'm guessing it was made under a licensee by Deinus of America. So some of the information with the exception of the compressor model number doesn't seem correspond with Tecumseh's data. :dunno:

Further information about the compressor: 1/8 HP -115 volts - Ohms (start windings 14- 20 - (both windings) 18-24.

If you wish to clean up the data plate a little more you might clear up something more on it.
Let me know.

No worries, I think I have enough info to go on. I wanted to use a pepsi emblem/logo on the front of the fridge that would be from that era the fridge was made. I might go with the pepsi logo from 1951-1962.

Thanks again.
