What Would you do with...

An old Craftsman Tool stand?

I got this yesterday, and I'm trying to come up with a good use for it. I'm pretty sure it formerly had a Radial Arm Saw on it, as it has marks on top for an angled base, narrow at the back wide at the front.

The stand itself is sturdy enough, and it stands 32-1/2" high, (too low for a RA saw IMHO) 18" deep, and just under 24" wide.

The drawer is nothing special, not even metal slides for full extension.

Both sides are perforated like pegboard, so I assume peg board hooks should work with it.

3 of 4 corners have an tab bolted on to anchor the thing down if needed, but I'm pretty sure these would not be missed if removed, and that I could put casters on If desired.

I've not a single idea at the moment what I might do with it at this point. so my question to everyone is for ideas for using it. What would you do with it if you had it? My tools and what I do in my garage are very diversified, so almost anything might be on the table for this guy.

If I had it I think it'd be on the curb, but that's just me. Not sturdy enough to put casters on, if it was, it might have a future as a 120 welder cart, but even then you'd have to put a bottle rack on it. Only thing I can think of is for it's original use with something on it like a saw, grinder, drill press, etc. Since it's not portable, I don't see the advantage of any of that.

Give it to someone starting to put together a garage and who might use it. Floor space is kind of precious, and I try to minimize what I use it for instead of looking for things to hog it up. :)

Drill press stand? Attach some casters and use it as a diagnostic equipment cart? Fit it with a power strip and use it to corral your cordless tools? Get yourself a brake lathe?

Take that small drawer out and use it as a small item spray "booth"

I would say put a plasma cutter on it and use the pegboard to hang the gun and ground... or clean it up really nice and use it as a night stand in the man room.

Wow, making an assumption aren't you? I said it was sturdy, in fact it's made entirely of 16 gauge except for the drawer, which is a lot heavier than your run of the mill roller toolbox, which the good ones are 20 ga. and the cheap ones are 22.

Welding cart I have which is an old mid 50's 3 drawer Craftsman with a side box that holds my 120 Lincoln, and a side tilt up table permanently braced up with a small grounded vise for welding.

Drill press stand? Attach some casters and use it as a diagnostic equipment cart? Fit it with a power strip and use it to corral your cordless tools? Get yourself a brake lathe?

Now that's an idea (DP stand), although I prefer a floor stander, I have a second bench top DP, that is slated for restore. Hmmm.

The perforated sides don't make that very attractive. and a cardboard box makes a pretty fair paint boot that is disposable.

I would say put a plasma cutter on it and use the pegboard to hang the gun and ground... or clean it up really nice and use it as a night stand in the man room.

Haha, I like the second idea!

1. Sand blast, repaint.

2. Build and seal an acrylic box to fit the opening.

3. Add water and fish.

The top drawer with the bottom cut out would serve as the light hood and hold a small canister filter. I have built a couple acrylic aquariums, although not in a tool stand. Might not be your cup of tea, but hey, you asked. :)

I would just use it as an organizer, it has all the holes like a peg board you could hang up all sorts of stuff in there and have some things sitting on the tray in the bottom.

This reminds of a visit some time back to an major manufacturer of Compute Storage, and one of their strongest competitors back then was a company called Auspex.

In the lobby they had taken an Auspex 19 inch rack set with all its panels with the Auspex logos everywhere, and converted it into a huge Aquarium. the story they used was that the had taken it in in trade and this was the best use they could come up with for it. A huge dig at the competition! :lol_hitti

I like the idea, but I'm past doing aquariums; the small Pond out back near my deck is all the fish I want.

To be useful to me as an organizer, it would have to be a lot higher, which would ruin access to the drawer...

Lots of interesting ideas! Keep them coming!

You sould like a guy who would have an arbor press sitting around, I bet that stand would work good for one of those.

Another good idea, but most of the small/medium sized bench tools like those (including my arbor press), at mounted on wood mounting bases and are setup to drop into one of my B&D Work mates so they don't take up valuable bench top space.

If you had a wood stove in your garage, it would make a cool stand to store wood in! Then you could put a hatchet, matches, paper, etc in the drawer.. Just an Idea! :)

put some wheels on it; dedicate it to something specific:

diagnostic tools (scanners, laptop, etc.)

charger, jump start, testing station

wire wheel/grinder stand or any bench power tool that can be bolted down

oxy torch/cutting station

mig welder station

so many ideas... what do you find you use allot but keep dragging them around or have to keep putting away that would be great to be wheeled around? Many options but could really be useful too! :)

I have thought about this and the best thing I can come up to do is just put a plywood top on it, jam it some where it fits and let it collect what it collects. Flat surfaces always have a way of filling up.

Put a shelf in the middle and use it to store oil and filters for oil changes. Keep your oil filter wrenches in the drawer.

I'd use it for a hidding spot. Put what ever you want to hide inside then face it towards the wall and put a couple of boxes or somthing on top of it and next to it.

It does look a LOT like a bedside table! ;-)

I would put casters on the bottom of this and fill it with 'consumables'--saw blades, sandpaper, sanding belts, sanding drums, hacksaw blades, etc. Use the peg board on the sides for consumables and the tools you commonly need to change blades, etc.
