Whats a door tech to do...

Well, finally had my kick in the ****... Time to upgrade my own doors (79 vintage rotted wood panel doors; with 82 vintage Genie POSs) as those electric heaters are running the power bill way up, and it's about to get a NG furnace.

Did one of those lovely "hail damage" replacements - Just so happened those old doors are perfect for my house... :) (3 dents total? most of the "damage" was oil-canning/barrelling from the roll forming process... But don't try to teach a insurance appraiser anything :eyecrazy: )

Of course the problem is... So many options... What to choose :)

I could just do a face change / spring swap - After all my '79 vintage door hardware is heads and tails above the strength of the current stuff... Slap on a pair of liftmaster 3280s (aka whisper drives) and call her done...

But I've got this huge collection containing most of the best hardware available...

"New" door faces are 2yr old Steelcraft T16s, not my choice, but the price was right... They've at least got some R and U value, unlike my current ones.

I've got two distinctly different bays in my garage, a working bay, and a "project bay" (where my 4runner sits buried under 10,000lbs of door parts :D)

The working bay, should be receiving a truck at night, and usually is used for fab/work...

The project bay... It's gonna be a witch with a capital B to change that door... Toyota's pretty much immobile, so it'll be used as scaffolding. I expect blood will flow while trying to change it out  I'm my own worst homeowner...

So thinking 2 different door systems altogether... Project bay gets a bomb proof setup, run the existing 12" radius tracks (They're heavier than the current "commercial" tracks) Big ol Richard wilcox headplates - with football bearings, 3280 (whisper drive) belt drive. It wont get used much, but it'd be nice to know it'll always work when I do need it :)

The working bay, since I can tinker and access to tweak as needed... I've long been eyeballing the Overhead Door brand "elliptical" track system, normally it's 10.5" radius track (it's a neat 3 pc system, with no **** joints); but if you flip it... It sure looks like it'd be perfect for ~18" radius, and I should be able to just fit that... There's a 3800 on my R&D bench, that hasn't been touched in months; It's functional, Can't really sell it as I've ripped it apart repeatedly to test/try/scavenge (and replace) parts - so perhaps slapping it up on my door makes most sense, and then it's at least doing something other than gathering dust, and still available to me if I have something I have to try...

Am thinking about those pretty powdercoated tracks/hardware I run across... Dunno about powdercoating, but perhaps a few coats of gloss black on the hardware? Might purdy things up a smidge?

Anyone have thoughts? Requests? Yeah I'll post pics as I go... If I can find a garage under all the stock... :)

Comercial fully glazed bronze anodize aluminum door. Dual pane frosted windows with 3" track and a commercial drawbar operator... man, if I had the money.

Nah, if money was no object... black powder coated with cross reed glass ;)

But that's not in the budget, need to pay for hvac upgrades and a new washer dryer here in the near future...

OK since I'm speaking Greek to 90% ;)

Original 12" radius behind/ left... (looks like they docked 3" from verticals)
Farthest right - normal elliptical track layout
Center - reversed elliptical

So foreground, typical helton head plates/splices, used by thousands of mfg'ers... middle is the Richard Wilcox I'll be using on the project bay... rear upright, the overhead door branded elliptical head plates...

Did I mention I was going for beef not cheap? If your wondering, heltons are cheapest costing about 10$ less for the pair...

Kinda, of course I walked in with some idea of what I wanted... but its still an open ended question... there's a lot of brain power here, and I like ideas I haven't seen done before... Was hoping someone had something interesting to try out :D

There's a reason for the practice in private before performing in public rule...

But, 3½" from the ceiling, seals correctly and runs smooth like silk... had some issues with balance on the current crop of 400 drums, ended up using some ancient drums, which then required math... none of my current spring calculators show a wd-4 drum :D had to pull out an ancient spring book to find them...
