What I learned - the shop as I had it set up 2 years ago was unworkable, and this place showed me so many tricks from turning it into a cluttered mess to a workable moneymaking space...

I've also leaned jealousy... that as nice as mine is now... after looking at some of you guy's shops... it's still got a ways to go!

so true!! I've never really been one to hang out in those traditional chick spots ... malls, shoe stores, and Bed Bath & Beyond hold no allure for me whatsoever but I LOVE Garage Journal. If I had to make a list of what I've learned here I'd be typin for at least a week. I love ya all!!!

I have learned so much from this site. I have learned things like how to run the wiring from my house to the new garage, how to install the elect. box, I've learned welding tips. I could go on and on. The one good thing about this site is that it is for men and you can say any thing you want and you don't have to worry about getting kicked off, as long as it isn't about religon or politics. I mean if you read something you don't agree with you can say "thats ********" with out worring about someone droping the hammer on you. There are also some realy smart guys on here. There are old guys on here that have forgotten more about their field of expertise than some of us will ever know. This is a great place to hang out.

I've learned that while most people I knew before coming here didn't understand making my garage bigger than my house, there was a whole community here who "got it"

And I will echo those who appreciate the helpfulness of this group. I have started several" question" threads for cars and home and have always gotten some helpful guidance.

Unless you're a contractor, then it's the homeowner that's the problem.

-Way more people have the same gas station color scheme I painted my shop than I would have ever thought (I painted mine to mimic my dad's old station)

- People will live and die for snap on, not so much other brands.

- harbor freight is the only place a man will proudly use a coupon.

- I have been swayed to the point where I will epoxy my garage floor... One day.

I’ve learned that when it comes to grammar and punctuation there are some seriously **** retentive people on here. I’m a mechanic not an English major I don’t make a living proof reading and correcting writings. For that I apologize if you have to suffer though a post that is not to your standards.

But I will give you guys a friendly notice, you may laugh or find it humorous that our spelling and grammar are not to par with yours. But we also laugh when you bring us your car, 4-wheeler, boat or any other of the numerous motorized toys you possess and tell us the “thingy “ is loose (yes I have had men describe it to me like that) or it makes a clunk noise.

It is sad that on a site as great as this that people may be afraid to contribute due to not wanting to get called out over not spelling something right or getting the punctuation wrong.

Aside from that, I’ve learned many neat tricks and ideas in the whats on your walls storage thread. Love looking at the shop builds in the gallery section. Useful info in the electrical all the time. This is truly a great place to expand your knowledge and learn to hone your skills.

But in all fairness, let me explain the spelling and punctuation thing the way it was explained to me when I was a boy.....

Marilyn Vos Savant...a bonafide genius....said this.......

She said that people who spell and punctuate incorrectly aren't necessarily DUMBER THAN people who can write and spell correctly....but they are PERCEIVED as being dumber.

As well as people who can write or spell correctly aren't necessarily SMARTER THAN a person who cannot spell correctly, but they are PERCEIVED as being smarter.

Also that being a good speller does not mean you spell everything correctly, all the time. But that you can notice when something IS NOT spelled correctly.

I am only saying that the "grammar nazis" you speak of, it's just how their brain works. When something is off in the written words....It's like....BAM!!!!.....a big neon light that stabs the eyes.

Cops are some of the worst spellers ever. Notoriously bad. But they are some of the smartest people I know.

I've been in their stores before( Bed Bath and Beyond).
I always ask if they need any help in the " Beyond" department.

I guess I'm a terrible person because by the time I start searching GJ after work I could care less for spelling and grammer. After I do 6 hours of work or more sometimes writing estimates that clearly explain to the customer what is wrong with their machine, I lose interests in pleasing people that want an opinion or have a problem that I may be able to help diagnose or solve.

That there's a ton more tools that I need to buy still.

Seriously it's just so nice knowing that my shop/tool obsession is quite normal. I also like the inspiration that I get from this site. I never would have thought to purchase some of the tools that I now have in my own garage (i.e. lift, wheel balancer, on the car brake lathe, etc.) if it wasn't for seeing how others were already using these items in their own shop.

I've learned that a post you made asking for suggestions for a good garbage can to buy will be one of your most viewed posts while other posts covering unique ways to solve problems will go mostly un-read.

Plus I really appreaciate all the help and suggestions.
