Knowing the dimensions and style of gate will help with getting suggestions suitable for your situation.
For one of my gates I used cold rolled steel angle reinforced with gussets to avoid racking, with cedar trim and face. I painted the steel with a zinc rich cold galvanizing paint covered with a cedar-colored paint for aesthetics.

Welding up a steel frame is always my first choice when possible. You can also purchase a steel farm gate and cut it up to fit.
"Welding up a steel frame is always my first choice when possible.." This. I have welded light steel angle iron and bolted wood to it. The steel resists sagging and the bolted wood reinforces it. Hinges made by welding short pieces if 3/4 steel pipe to angle iron and buying gate supports to screw into wood posts with vertical pieces to slip into 3/4 inch pipe, but possibilities are numerous.

A welded steel gate just might be excessively strong for a decorative Flower Garden; but if you need to contain raging bulls it may be appropriate.

Right, the 1" tube for gates that are fairly narrow and the heavier farm gate when you need something 8-12ft.
