Still in the midsts of my shop re-do. The lighting is almost done, the bench is in it's new location.

I'm thinking about what to put on the wall behind my bench. The old standby pegboard? Shelving unit? Small parts bins?

The shop is used heavy automotive restoration and repair. It gets some limited use for typical home owners repairs, VERY little woodworking. The bench is 10' long vise at one end, benchtop drill press at other. It's 3' deep, has one double outlet at each end and a double box at the center. They use 1/2" surface mounted EMT for power. Thanks for the input. Keith

I use mine for auto resto and repair and for me it's hard to beat peg board. All my most commonly used tools are right there handy. My small parts, etc. are kept in cabinets.

I mainly do auto restoration, some fabricating, some household. I have pegboard with wrenches, screwdrivers, nutdrivers, clamps, and all my cordless tools. Works pretty well.

Directly above mine are a bunch of shelves. Below that are the license plates for most every car and motorcycle I've ever owned. There's also a 32" Panasonic flat screen that's nicer than the TV in the house. I do the messy stuff on another bench that I can roll around.

Nothing....

...my main workbench is in the middle of the 2 car garage. The only thing above it is the 4 foot flourescent light, the drop for 120 VAC and the air hose reel. This way I can see anyone that walks in the shop and have space for working LONG material.

Strangely, my house came with a pegboard the previous owner had installed, along one particular section of wall, exactly where I wanted to put a bench. When I finally got one of those 9 foot, butcherblock jobs from Costco years later, it turned out to be exactly the same width and exactly the right height to meet the back edge of the bench. :bounce:

So far, I really like having the peg board directly behind the bench and along the whole length of the bench. I can see using cabinets or something else if nothing was there, but I'd never dream of taking down the pegboard I have now. It's grown on me and is extremely useful for keeping things within arms length of the bench.

my bench is a repurposed table from a library renovation.
it's too wide and too low to be used much as a real workbench, but does have some deep and wide shelves underneath. i keep glass beads, chainsaw, sawsall, spare propane tanks on the shelves.
i have a few small akro bins that i keeps grinding wheels ect in, a large metal wall cab above it. stacks of steel parts drawers next to that, abrasive chop saw on the other end.

my downstairs reloading/work room has some pegboard and a woodworkers bench that the previous owners left behind. i hang hand saws, hammers, plumpers basic wrenches ect on it, that dont easily fit into the built in drawers under bench

I just finished a set of cabinets above one of my workbenches. I used a Kreg Jig system to build three boxes, and bolted each to the wall, and to each other. Then added a face frame, then made basic doors.

The open shelves at the bottom hold the various cordless tool chargers. Everything else sits on adjustable shelves inside the boxes.

Each box is 20" wide, 12" deep, and 48" tall. By making separate boxes, each section can be easily installed by myself. My version of the cabinets on the Kreg Tools website. Theirs have doors that completely close off each box. I wanted the chargers to stay cool, so open shelves were a better choice.

Just before adding the doors, I installed some LED lighting under the cabinet.

Thanks for all the input guys. I spent some time looking at the tools and supplies in my shop that I use at the bench. I'm thinking the pegboard for the main area, a 12" deep shelf and small parts bins along the bottom. I'm thinking about putting a full size shelf under the bench (never had one of those before, not sure I'll like/use it). I also found a paint locker at a local junk shop I brought home. I have room at the left end of the bench for that.

I'll be putting kitchen type cabinets above my 1940's big *** metal desk. I use it mostly for drafting and electronics assembly (yes I still draw with a pencil and t-square) Keith

4x8 sheet of pegboard. Not as glamorous as shelving or cabinets, but extremely useful in keeping my most used hand tools handy. Plus, I know whenever I'm missing something.

Peg board and cabinets. My garage is a standard 20' x 20' 2 car so I need to make the most of my space. I keep the stuff I use the most on the wall and in the top of my roll cart. I do all automotive work, some home improvement stuff, no real woodworking.

Some pegboard is ok,, its not for everyone and wouldnt want to reach over bench for every wrench... I like what 2many did and a couple of these others, cobra and Falocon's are nice.

Also, heavy resto is slightly different than hobby,,, does this mean multiple men where time is money?

2' tall strip of pegboard for those awkward to store, but need to easily access, items then I'm putting some of the shallow HF tool cabinets on the wall above that for things that often find their home on the bench (but just end up cluttering it up).

I know what you mean about not liking pegboard, I have had it in the past, But never really gave it a fair shake, I keep a double bay roll a way in this area of the shop. A full upper and lower double bay box in the other part of the shop. Never really had a need for a set of wrenches on pegboard before.

I meant heavy as in 85% of the work performed is auto resto. 2-3 cars in the shop at any given time. Only one of them at any given time is one of my projects. I do a lot of one off fabrication for a few local race teams, and my name is passed around in the local hot rod community. So yes time is money, but not my main driving factor. I only do the jobs I find interesting, or are a tough problem to solve. The money is just to help fund tools and pay the power bill, very little cash makes it to my pocket. Keith

I have an old re-purposed kitchen cabinet with spray chemicals and other commonly used supplies like crimp connectors and different types of speed screws in plastic trays on the lower easy to reach shelf, and other less commonly used stuff on the rest of the shelves. Doors keep dust and the like out and have garage art on them...

Cabinets over the 30" wide part, STD (**** to do) white board over the 24" wide section.

Liking all of the above, very well done.

The bench on the wood/home side of the garage has pegboard behind it. The bench on the garage side has cabinets on one side, TV in the corner and nothing behind the area I generally do dirty work at.
