So I know this thread has been done before but I can't find one. I'm currently in the process of designing my new shop (40x60) and I'm trying to layout my cabinets (well atleast the initial layout ). Half of the shop (20x40) will be a dedicated woodshop and closed of from the remainder of the building to control dust but the rest of the shop will be open for doing mechanic/metal/everything else. What I'm trying to figure out is what folks store in their "stationary" drawers and cabinets. I obviously have room for all my basic hand and power tools sets but I have lots of room left over (for now) and was wondering what else folks are storing in cabinets. Especially what folks store in upper cabinets as I feel they are a bit less friendly for storage. Also do folks recommend cabinets or cubbies?

And go.....

Personally I really think cubbies in a woodshop are a terrible idea. Now that's not to say they don't have a place in a shop in general, but at least the ones that Dad has in our shop are where things go to die. They are dusty, dirty and full of things that had no other place but we "can't just throw out".

Cabinets, perhaps up in one of your overhead cabinets you could make a file for sand paper type products. Think a set of slots that you can house different sheets of sand paper, spare belts on pegs, discs, etc. You can even do that while having shelves close by (either in the same cupboard or below in the lower cabinets) that house your hand sanding tools such as RO and Mouse sanders that might use said sanding products. Upper cabinets are for both lesser used items and items that are lighter weight, should avoid dust, etc. 2e5c2cdb75e0672e4b2e41897925345c.jpg

I totally agree. I just want to use my wall space up vs it going to waste. Im more trying to figure out just what to do with the upper area. My base cabinets are going to be mainly dedicated to tool storage.

What's in your Cabinets!

Everything that fits

Filth never sleeps, it creeps in everywhere.

I try to keep everything in cabinets and everything put away in the main maintenance bay of my shop. That's where I do woodworking, auto maintenance, welding, etc. The cabinets there have everything from drills, nails, screws, grinders, test-tune equipment, plumbing, electrical, etc.

That area is walled off and sealed from the storage areas. (Hint: use Tyvek on the divider wall.. and exterior rated doors / windows on the divider wall... it helps to keep out the filth) All the large tools such as welders, radial arm saw, engine hoist, etc. are all on casters and stored in the storage area. Oil, paint, antifreeze, air compressor, saw horses, etc. are all in the storage area too.

After completion of a project this allows you to close the doors to the storage areas, sweep up the maintenance area, blow everything down with the air compressor, and then re-open the doors.

For more information and visuals check out my build thread below.

Happy Trails...

Cabinet 1 paint
Cabinet 2 air nailers and nails
Cabinet 3 battery chargers and small propane tanks
Cabinet 4 oil, bug killers, cleaners
Cabinet 5 extension cords

All lower on one wall

Same wall above the cabinets are my collections of parts organizers... And a bookcase full of paint cans.

Above all that is long lumber storage

Here's my cabinets. Only been in the garage a short time so it's not yet cluttered with junk. Luckily I have a large attic above where I can store stuff not needed on a regular basis.

I know I want lots of storage but I dont want to just store junk. A place for everything and for everything a place.

I my design is to have "stations" around the shop for different types of work. I will have a dedicated shop for woodworking and a portion dedicated to storing gardening/lawn tools/ equipment.

The remainder of the shop will be for metal working/mechanic work/outdoor sports storage/ kitchen area/ etc.

Because of this thread:
I looked in those 5 cabinets i mentioned earlier... and discovered something...

I stuff things in open spaces in cabinets that in retrospect... make ZERO sense as there are homes for those things...

To suddenly realize ... those random things have been there for YEARS...

Thanks to this thread...

I have a NEW PROJECT...

Thanks... sigh

I saw where you’re designing a new shop, congrats! I’m in the process of designing a remodel of my 36x48x16 myself..

My advice would be this: Unless you want a show space, minimize any built in cabinets and drawers! Drawers are where things go to die, cabinets are their stopping place along the way. I have both a commercial and a personal shop, and am redesigning both to have exactly 0 built in cabinets. In my opinion, the only way to keep organized is to make organizing easy. That is, to have the least obstructions from where I’m working with something, to where it is stored.

Now I know you have to have some cabinets, and I will have plenty as well. All of my walls will be pegboard, it readily accepts paint and in my case is cheaper than drywall. There will also be a French cleat system at the top, center, and bottom of the wall. This will hang all of my cabinetry, and counters, as well as any workstations I need. This system allows me to build whatever I want, wherever I want, as far as organization goes. Good luck on the build!

Just throwin’ my two cents in,
Korey.

Welcome Klundy......

Is that your setup? If so....you put your OCD to good use

Ddawg, those specific ones are not, but I will post mine when I have time to take some! I have to be OCD, because I am ADD and have an engineers brain lol... so for me, everything has to have a place that doesn’t require effort to get to (my attention span is good for one project, if I have to work to put something up, my brain refuses to cooperate and I end up with a big pile of tools!) which is why I say: drawers are where things go to die, cabinets are their stopping place along the way.

Thanks for welcoming me, I’m glad I found this place.

I have my garage setup for woodworking/auto, but I don't have anything dividing it.

Here is the wood shop side. Cabinets above lathe have rag and towels for finishing, garden stuff in the middle(which I need to move to the shed)and the far right has lathe equipment and DC stuff.

Cabinets above workbench have finishes, routers, and the last one hardware storage. The tall brown cabinet has all my handtools. The base cabinets and drawers all have hardware in them. And I second having more drawers than doors. Drawers in Lathe workbench have lathe tools in the top 2 and hardware in all the rest.

Cabinets on my automotive side of the garage. Have paints, chemicals, car detailing, and car electrical. All the bottom drawers have tools and car parts. The far right bottom cabinets have more chems and paints. The far left cabinets have more car parts.

The very last cabinet on the wall has vertical drawers full of car detailing.

I also enclosed my Hot water heater with pegboard to add more storage.

I really like shallow drawers. I have several that are only 2" deep.

Drawers under my main workbench.

What I find fascinating is all the woodworking cabinets and shelves in this thread and none of them are covered in sawdust. Mine always are.

So this is how far the planning has gotten me too. As you can see I have limited the cabinets but not removed them. I think this "stations" approach is best for my plans for this shop.

I have some time before we even start thinking of breaking ground so I'm sure this plan will change atleast 2 more times as this is on version 3 of the 56th concept.........(I with this was a lie:dunno:)
