What do you carry in your toolbox for pulling parts at the local pick-n-pull autoyard? I always seem to carry eiither too much or too little...

Best carries:

3/8 ratchet and deep sockets.
goose-neck pliers
4-in-1 screwdriver
Needle nose with wire cutters
ball peen hammer
large flat blade screwdriver--cheap doubles as prybar
adjustable wrench
fold out allen wrenches english/metric
Leatherman in pocket

What do you carry?

I made up a tool roll to carry with extreme basics. I leave more tools in the rig, but come back out only if I have to. the tool sroll is ol Denim jeans SWMBO sewed to about 24 years ago, and has:

8" crescent,
#2 philips,
1/4 straight blade,
tool for removing Ford door and window cranks, (60's)
Bezel tool for Ford dash control (again 60's this was when I was always after falcon/Ranchero parts)
A razor blade with a cardboard cover,
an assortment of wrenches from 3/8 to about 5/8,
Allen key set,
8" slip joints, and
8" arc joints.

Easy to carry, I could tel at a glance if I forgot anything and took seconds for the "toolbox check" - if they even bothered me with it.

If I knew I was going to need more, I used a bucket bungeed to a hand truck.

Outlaw has a good basic list, but I'll throw in a BMFH, cold chisel, cordless sawsall (when needed) utility knife and some PB blaster to the list.

If I am pulling parts for one of my own cars I go over it with what tools I will need for that job and bring them along.

Sorry for not searching more first. Did see one other thread but it looked like a lot of the discussion had gotten off topic.

Your box looks like it would be heavy!

Saw the other suggestion for a battery operated recip. saw. Sounds like a neat idea if I was going after some heavy mounts or springs. Can't take a torch into my favorite place. Would one set of batteries let you cut a full set of spring mounts (8) from the frame?

Usually a buddy comes along, so I have ratchets and sockets in three drives, combination wrenches, screwdrivers, various cutting tools for wire and rubber, pliers, safety glasses, some cleaning rags, some hand cleaner goop, some bottled water, an empty milk-crate, and a handtruck with pneumatic tires.

I always bring a hammer, but don't carry it in unless I KNOW I'll need it. Most of my trips to a yard were walk throughs for likely victims. I actually wound up with "tennis Elbow" (Tendinitis) from carrying the prior heavy bucket around. Work smarter, not harder... :D

Utility cart with pneumatic tires and a 4400 watt coleman generator. Also mounted on the cart is a twin cylinder compressor. Also bring a full set of 1/2 drive impact stuff. Sawzall, cutoff tools, an old chest with 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive tools, lots of pliers, sledge, cold chisels, many punches, combos from 5/16-1 1/4, pickle fork, snap ring stuff... Tons more smalls for odd jobs. I'll get a picture next time I make a junkyard run.

Yeah, when I make a junkyard run there's no messing around. Lots of stuff to pick up and not enough time. I also have found that people are more than willing to pay a nice tip in exchange for your services

A large 1/2" breaker bar is a must have unless you are hunting for trim or small parts.

I carry the tool bag that I have in the truck. I keep thinking about taking a picture of what's in it, but I never remember too.

Hey All,
There's a chance I'll head to the yard today or tomorrow. If so, Ill try to get some pics up. It was a well worthwhile project. Another nice benefit is that everything is fastened in a "quick release" manner. So upon successful removal of axle, engine block, transmission, etc. The cart can be wheeled to the truck and unloaded then brought back to receive the prize of the day.

The dolly cart is a great idea. (saw this last time I was at the yard) Most of the time the supplied wheel barrows are gone and if you have to lug a ******, motor...etc having your own cart would be handy.

For the next trip nothing more than small flat, #3 philips, 10.8v battery impact gun, 3/8 deep socket, 11/32 deep socket, and a #2 philips socket.

Other wise I always have tools in my truck for most anything else I stumble upon.

I don't have an actual junkyard set but I do have backups of my most commonly used tools which I put in a small Snap-On hand box for going on road trips. They are:

1/4 drive short sockets, sizes 3/16 to 9/16 and 5mm to 13mm
3/8 drive short sockets, sizes 1/4 to 3/4 and 8mm to 19mm
1/2 drive sockets in 17mm, 19mm, 21mm
Combo wrenches in 10mm to 19mm and 5/16 to 3/4
1/4 and 3/8 ratchets and 1/2 breaker bar
3 inch and six inch extensions in 1/4 drive and 3/8 drive
Slip joint, channellock, and side cutter pliers
Screwdrivers in #1 and #2 Phillips and 3/16 and 5/16 flathead
Multimeter and wire stripper/crimper tool
Small prybar
Flashlight and extra batteries

two things I carry that have come in very handy the last couple of trips to the junk yard.
1. Flexible ratchet extensions - I have used these to get to bumper bolts, under bumpers, under parts you don't want. etc.
I wouldn't use them in my garage to put stuff together, but they have helped in a couple of awkward spots.
some like this -
http://www.bing.com/shopping/neiko-...ons&lpq=flexible ratchet extensions&FORM=HURE

I bought some at AutoZone for maybe $4 - $5.

2. Snake shot in a .38 revolver

Screwdrivers
Cutters
PLiers
