What's out there... Small top boxes

Well guys, I need to pick up a first tool box for my oldest son. I do not want to spend a small fortune on one as it will be up-graded at some point. He is taking an automotive course at the local Voc school and we just found out that he needs his own basic hand tool set. Now I turned wrenched for years as a body man and have all mine in the snap-on box, but he sure is not taking mine! :spit:

So let's rule out the "big guys" for now... I want to pick him up a semi-portable hand box. Three to four drawers and a closing top lid. I am not a huge fan of Craftsman really, but what is out there for build quality? Something nice and roller slides would be a big plus.

Grab one of the big craftsman sets. Cannot go wrong for a great starter setup.

Then grab one of their roller bearing top boxes. Few $100 and he is all set.

I don't know what the setup is where he will need tools but you might check out some of the "carts" that have 3 or 4 drawers and a locking top. I saw a pretty nice Mac one on my local cragislist for $350

Here is a Snap-on box for $75 http://hartford.craigslist.org/tls/1514072105.html I would rather have that than a new Craftsman.

I don't have much going on tonight so I am looking at the CT craigslist. This looks to be a pretty good deal to get started http://newhaven.craigslist.org/tls/1505899115.html

If those two items I linked to were in my state I would have all ready bought them.

just my 2 cents

maybe take a look at the kobalt boxes @lowes, to me they seem better quality than a craftsman. or like redgreen says, check out one of them fancy newfangled carts with a locking top and a couple drawers. depending on prices in your area you might find a deal or 2 on CL. at least around here everything on CL must be gold plated

This HF cart would probably make a lot of sense. On sale right now with coupon for $99.99. That's a really good deal, normal price is $190

You can always get a high quality roller and top later, but this should get him started.

The new Harbor Freight cart is also very good, though a bit more expensive. Very tough steel, latching drawers, and good construction. I'd pit it against a truck brand cart any day.
