I know there is pre-prime 167 but I see some recommend a water based primer. I plan on using Epoxy-Coat or one of Legacy's epoxies which I know you don't have to use a primer but I think its added insurance. My floor is 6 months old and I will be acid etching it fyi. Its very clean with no oil stains and no moisture problems.
Whats the best primer for epoxy?

Hi,
I am new to these forums, but I have some expertise to share. I used to be an industrial epoxy floor contractor and I found that primers were not usually needed. What is needed is good preparation. Primers used to be used only for self-levelling epoxy because there was only one coat and you need to seal off the porous concrete. For normal epoxy topcoats we just thinned the first coat. If the adhesion was good we never had peeling or chipping for the life of the floor and that was with forklifts running over them every 5 minutes for many years. You should be very mindful of the maximum times between coats, if that is 8 hrs then recoat within that period as long as the floor is not sticky.

The thinner products require a primer as they have little build and show inconsistencies easier. If you prep properly, as the last gent mentioned, and use a high solids epoxy coating, you will be just fine.
