In a recent Adam Savage workshop video he features this little hammer, and I'm trying to figure out what it is. The handle looks something like a jeweler's chasing hammer, but the head doesn't immediately remind me of anything I've seen before. It's almost halfway to being a gavel, other than the head being steel. Or, the shape is not unlike a surgical mallet, except you probably wouldn't want a wood handle for that.

Is this a specialized tool used by some trade I don't recognize, or just somebody's homemade project? Either way, it's a cute little thing.

That style of handle was very common on English carpenters hammers in the late 19th century. I’ve handled a couple and the balance is lovely, though the shaft was thicker than the one shown.

The heads were obviously very different though!

Possibly a Cooper's hammer? (Used to set barrel hoops to the correct position).

Drum hammer. Usually made of brass or aluminum for specialty use. Steel is for blacksmithing. But that one is just odd.

Edit: silversmithing.

From the size of the tool and the slenderness of the handle I'm wondering if it's a plane adjusting hammer. Although most of the ones I've seen are brass...

Google Chasing Hammer.
The handle on Adam’s hammer is the same type.
The head is different from whatbis found now on chasing hammers, but it’s possible that is a heavier or old design.

Cool hammer.

The handle definitely says jewelry or watchmaker or goldsmith etc. and looks European shaped, I have a few that shape and they are very comfortable and very springy, definitely not for heavy whomping.

I like hammers and have seen hundreds on the great wide web, but never a barrel shaped head like that, might be a one off custom.

Try cross posting your question on this thread, these guys love a good hammer:

" Google Chasing Hammer. "

I read this as "Google-Chasing Hammer" as in something posted for the express purpose of causing others to burn up their keyboards trying to find the answer to an inexplicable question. Re: Snipe hunt.
