I think those top chest may be a little harder to sell than a combo or roller. I think $200 is a realistic asking price but don't know what you will get, depends on your market and competition on CL.

Local market conditions vary significantly. Your best bet is to look at asking prices for competing boxes in your area. Keep in mind that even if your box has some better features (ball bearing vs friction slides), other boxes without are still going to drag its price down to a degree. Having said all that I could just quote crewchief888 verbatim as to what I consider it worth as a used item.

Top chest are just harder to sell then a roll cab. There are several different ones just sitting on my CL right now. Unless a SO "super chest" that would match my kr 300 would show up, I find it pretty easy to pass them up no matter how cheap they are.

Thanks guys, I may throw it on CL and see what someone will pay for it. Worth a shot at least

Thats the great thing about free advertising. You can throw out your line and see if someone will bite. Back in the day before the internet you had to pay for the most part unless you posted at the grocery store or laundry mat.

Looks like I might just keep it and still get the 44". I'm sure I'll eventually grow into it seeing how one roller/top combo is busting at the seems and that top is getting pretty full.

The thing with craigslist (IMPO) is something is only worth what people see the competition as.

Say you have a $5000 car, but then someone lists the exact same car, same condition for $2800. Then your car (in the eyes of the majority of craigslist users) is now only worth $2800.

Tool boxes seem take a really big hit from new price compared to other items. However I have noticed that Craftsman branded stuff seems to hold their value well. Value also depends heavily on condition, since you didn't post a picture of your actual box. We really don't know the condition of it. Also location is a factor.

On the other hand that is a "better" chest than the standard 6 drawer top box. With it being ball bearing and greater than 12" deep like so many.

I think you would have to ask yourself what the lowest you would let it go for, then list it for ~$40 more than that. That way if someone gives you full asking price, great. If they do talk you down the $40, you still get what you wanted out of it.

Personally I would definitely pay up to $100 if it is in working condition. $150 if it works and looks good (no rust). MAYBE $180 if it was in pristine condition. Sorry but the market is extremely competitive and I am rather "economically challenged" shall we say. There is no way I would pay near $250 or $300 for that. That is getting close to a new harbor freight 44" cost, which is a lot more useful and spacious.

Best of luck with your decision

The box retail out the door with sales tax might be $400, but in this area it would be difficult to get more than $100-150 for it.

Definitely in pristine condition. I bought it when I worked at Sears, picked it up for $100 after I talked my boss down on it. So honestly, as long as I get more than that I would be pretty happy

That was one of the hard parts of leaving that job, giving up on all the tool deals!

I know I am not willing to pay top dollar for anything used. My guess is most on the GJ are the same way. Just because someone here says its worth $75 or $100 doesnt mean there is someone else who wouldnt pay more for it. If it was mine I would sell it for $200 You would need to do 4 things. #1 Post a link showing its regular price of $459.99 and the sale price of $367.99. Then tell them they could save $167.99 plus whatever sales tax is in your area (would be $194.76 where I live) Thats almost 1/2 off the sale price. #2 Make sure its clean and take good pictures. #3 Mention its never been in a garage, and is in perfect condition. #4 Make sure they know its the deep 18" top not the normal 12" or 16" deep, and that it has ball bearing drawers. Those things will make yours stand out from the rest of the stuff out there. At that price it might not sell overnight but if you have time to wait it would sell, at least in my area. Good luck.
