That's not just a welding table...it's a dedicated frame jig. Mostly used to make motorcycle, bike, mini-bike, and go cart frames. That's a smaller one, but still worth several hundred bucks....buy it...or let me know the guys info and I'll buy it.

Several hundred?

The bigger ones can be several thousand if they are in good shape with no cracks.

Acorn is still in business and tooling is still available along with what you can find on the used market.

I would have no problem paying $1500 for that platen, the stand, and the tooling.

It's an Acorn welding platen not a frame jig although it could be used as the base of one. They're still made by Acorn. In used shape they usually bring about 1,500 ish at auction with stand.

Edit: ZT is faster than I am.

That's a Acorn platen table. I just sold 2 used 60" x 60" tables with stands for $2000.00 each. The guy that bought them kept saying how happy he was to get them for that price. That table would be a steal for anything under a grand if it's not beat up too bad.

Unless you have a forklift you may want to think twice about buying that platen, we had four of them in our shop and they were a ***** to move around even with a 6,000 lb forklift.

ha, I showed the picture to the wife. She lived in Philly for several years.

She thinks it is cool and wants to clean it up and use it as a coffee table. :)

I told her it is very heavy and I don't think the wood floor would like it very much.

The owner of said table replied to my (admittedly low) offer and said he will think about it. Fingers crossed.

You might want to rethink owning that heavy SOB unless you have a permanent place to put it.

Exactly what I thought when I saw your post.

I'd put it on wheels. That platen is only about 875 lbs according to the Weldsale catalog. Weldsale makes knockoffs of the Acorn platen:

http://www.weldsale.com/pdfs/2011-WeldsaleCatalog.pdf

They also have retail pricing in that catalog. It's interesting to how a simple piece of holy cast iron can resell for 50% to 75% of new cost.

I was thinking of putting it right up against the back wall of my garage and hanging a fiberglass blanket on the wall.

What sort of wheels would you put on it?

The second most quotable line this week. Amazing! We have several of those tables in the fab shop at work. As others have said, high dollar stuff there. I assume you will start out with a Harbor Freight 110 volt welding machine? :lol_hitti

I mean no harm, just amusing to see. I guess it is good to go big or go home.

BTW... this was the most quotable line this week:
To keep the tools some what neat I use an old trash barrel and just throw everything in there.

Actually, those are a little overboard for 800lbs. Just about any 6" polyurethane tired caster will be sufficient for that table. I would also put floor locks under it so you can lock it in position and level it in the intended location.

P.S. Don't let the jealous guys get to you. They just wish they had one in their sights too. :D

I'm mildly amused that on one hand you are criticizing buying a quality item, 2nd hand, at a good price.. and then in the same breath, you flip the coin and bust on buying new cheap **** as well.

Which is it, flip flop?

HOLY ****, those casters are huge. I saw them earlier, but I just noticed the gatorade bottle sitting on top of them

Whats the weight capacity of those things and how much do they weigh each?

2,400lbs. each @5MPH, although with firmer tread material they're rated up to 10,000lbs. each @5MPH.

They're about 45lbs. a piece.

Well not to make anyones **** sore but I do have a friendly request.
Considering what some people would pay for the table and if the owner turns down your price and asks for a price that is over what you would like to pay for it, would you mind pm'ing some of the more serious people that have replied to this post or maybe have already pm'ed you, and give out some details so it doesn't get turned into scrap because the guy just can't seem to get rid of it?
It breaks my heart to think about all the old tools that get scrapped because the old timer thinks nobody wants this old rusty piece of junk.

I'm just saying!!

The guy accepted my offer and my friend picked up the table for me today.

As I feared, the left corner has a piece broken off that you can see in the picture above. I wasn't sure from that pic.. but yes, it has damage. Of course it is 'only' cosmetic and won't affect the functionality.

$500

Yea, I probably should have just bought a Strong Hand Nomad table for $150 (or 2 + an attachment panel).. but I figure I can always get my money back out of this and more when I am done with it.

Hell, the retail on the 'accessories' is more than $500. Those arm clamps are $112 each *eek*

http://www.acorniron.com/products/armclamp.html

I figured a good project to learn on will be to buy some square stock and C clamps and make some fixtures of my own on the cheap.

Awesome, glad it didn't go to the scrap pile.

Post a picture when you have it all cleaned up.

Damn, congrats! That's a hell of a score.
How big is your shop/garage?

If you have room, you might think about putting that several feet away from the walls (like in the middle of a bay in a 2-bay garage) and build the rest of your shop around it, with that as the centerpiece.
you'd be surprised how functional a work table in the middle of the shop is.
Then you'd also be able to save the money by not buying casters for it.

Threw some wheels on it and cleaned it up a little bit.

Still need to paint the letters black. I started to sand them down to leave them bare, but changed my mind.

PowerDubs,

I meant no malice towards you. I meant to make a joke comparing a VERY professional table being used by a novice in a home garage. Kind of like buying a large tractor because you need to cut the grass. Not an exact comparison, but you get the idea. But if you could get the tractor for the same price as a riding lawnmower, I would buy the tractor too. :) You got a damn fine table for the same price you would find a decent home built table. Well done. The paint is looking good.

Couple cans of Ford blue from Tractor supply.

My welder is blue, so I figured why not. It's just a cheapo I picked up off of Craig's List-

Campbell Hausfeld 135amp, 115v Mig with cart, gas tank, helmet and gloves for $150.

It was another one of those things that the price was cheap enough that I can always get my money back out of it.

I put those wheels on. They don't lock, but they don't need to.

The table weighs so much, it takes everything I've got to get it to move. Unless I put all my force into it, it might as well not be on wheels.
