Just bought some green snap on long nose pliers and they came really dirty? Not too big of a deal, cleaned right off with some Ballistol but it’s the point when you spend good money. Anybody else experience this with SO products? I just ordered a bunch of SO products as I’m a big fan but this was a surprise

Could be my iPhone, I bought them directly from snap ons website
Cool. Just old stock I guess. A little surprised they let them out like that and didnt take 30seconds to wipe them down, but I suppose it could have happened in shipping. No real harm though

Had some screwdriver’s that where like that. Got off the truck and did not see that they where like because of the packaging. Came off with some cleaning.

I bought a bunch of green Talon grips this past year and 3 of them were dirty also, one was worse then yours. But they did clean up easily and look just fine. I think its the oil they use to prevent rusting is just transferring to the handles when they have them stored together. No big deal.

Practically every brand of pliers has some “dirty” oil that can leak out of the rivet joint.
This includes Knipex, Chanellock, Facom, Bahco, Wiha, etc. etc.
If the pliers are packed with a layer of oil to prevent rust, the dirty oil from the joint can mix with the clean oil.
If it really bothers you, you can clean the pliers, then oil the joint till the joint gets clean, but it takes a while, and it’s only really worth it if the joint is a bit stiff.

I bought some Snap-On needle nose off the website and they came dirty like that, but also there was grit in the pivot! I had to oil it and work it out. I was a little disapointed they came that way, but despite that, they are my favorite pair of needle nose.

I must have missed the pix somehow. I thought we were talking a bit of oil/grease from manufacturing that didn't get fully removed. I would have sent those back just on principle - that's beyond just dirty and looks used.

I wouldn't have a problem buying a "New/Other" or "Used/Functions Like New" product from SO, but would want it described as such and priced at a small discount.

Regardless of Harbor Freight or Snap on, the manufacturer should have plenty of ways to deliver a tool to the consumer clean. For example, if those were sitting on the shelf of a big box store, what do you think the reaction would be?

I guarantee the customer would be asking for a discount.....IF they weren't already offered at a discount.

It's a, um, er, protective coating. You really messed up by removing it, man.

Instead of cleaning them, you're supposed to just work on a bunch of dirty junk in a chicken house or gravel pit or something until you've added your own protective coating in order to preserve the factory's protective coating, so your, uh, investment will be double protected.

That looks like protective googe.... but over-googed. I agree that it's kinda not cool.

If it cleans up and you're satisfied, awesome. Folks forget that there are professions where high-end tools are needed, but where greasy-grossness can be a liability depending on the work.

I think that's the key.

If it's some leftover grunge from manufacturing and/or shipping, and it wipes off leaving a sparkly new tool, that's no problem. Weird, but whatever.

If it looks like a tool someone used for rebuilding a sewage pump and then returned, not OK.

In this case, it's the former. The owner invested 30 seconds with a rag and maybe some WD-40, and he's happy. I think there's just some variability in the amount of protective glop they put on these so they won't rust. Because rust is the gravest sin of all.

Wow nobody having a conniption calling OP a tool polisher!

thats pretty odd that they would look like that straight out of the box, though they still don’t look used IMO given the pattern of the marks. Looks like just the oil that usually gets worked out of the joint with movement since you can see lots of it in that area, so someone on the line must have put a hell of a lot more than usual on there and it coated everything then got rubbed around certain spots through movement in shipping. Glad they cleaned up well in any case, nice pickup I’ve been wanting a pair myself for awhile

I understand the principle and i agree in theory, but no way I’d go through the hassle of returning them honestly as long as the teeth aren’t used I’d just clean it off like op did

Yeah they definitely were brand new, the handles just looked “dirty”. But it cleaned right up. All is good

I can't say I disagree, but lots of places would have sold that as a blem or New/other. I agree I'd clean it and move forward, but it wouldn't give me a lot of faith in the brand. If these were from HF/whatever, I feel like there would be more than a couple people swooping in and decrying the lack of QC/etc.

My channellock linesman pliers were leaking black goo for a while. The handles would get dirty like that.

Edit:
That green colour is pretty.
